Title is in City's hands . . . but it's not over yet
Manchester City got a great result against their heated city rivals United and I didn’t watch as I couldn’t decide who I was rooting for!It was a game won bya solitary goal and now it’s up to City to take full advantage. The title’s in their hands. They have a tricky game tomorrow against Newcastle United who have two excellent front-runners and were superb in their win over Chelsea on Wednesday, but City know exactly what they have to do.They have so many quality players in their ranks, no one would bet against them getting a result with so much at stake. They can put themselves in position to win their first Premier League title.United welcome Swansea City to Old Trafford and have to get all three points. They need to put their foot down from the outset and get a goal in order to take advantage of any slip-up by City.United’s title chances are no longer in their hands and they can only blame themselves because three weeks’ ago they were eight points ahead and on their way to another championship before blips against Wigan and Everton. The loss to Wigan saw their lead cut drastically, but it was the 4-4 draw with Everton, when they were winning 4-2 with the game all but dead, that caused the most damage. There are no easy games in the league, whether you’re playing teams at the top or the bottom.* * * *Real Madrid won La Liga this week and were worthy winners after their form throughout the whole season.Barcelona could have retained the title but suffered some silly losses.Real’s win is good for football. You don’t want the same team winning the title every year. It gets boring and that’s the beauty of the Premier League this season.Lionel Messi broke Gerd Muller’s European season record on Wednesday with his hat-trick and he can add to his total in the next two games, although he has played 10 more games than Muller did.His tally is now 68 for the campaign, passing the previous mark of 67 in 1972/73 by the German. You can’t take anything away from what Messi’s doing. He gets all the accolades and deserves them. I’m pleased that he maintained such a high level for the entire season.* * *West Ham took a massive step on Thursday in their quest to get back in the top flight, beating Cardiff 2-0 in Wales. But it is not over yet. We still have to go home and do the job and see what happens in the other play-off match (Blackpool and Birmingham) and hope that we’ll be playing one of them at Wembley next weekend. We are too big a club to be in the Championship. I want to see us back up this term and fingers crossed, I’ll be blowing bubbles in the near future.
