Hammers back where they belong: in top flight
I am ecstatic that my former team West Ham are returning to the English Premier League next season after beating Blackpool 2-1 in the Championship League play-off final last weekend.I was on the edge of my seat from the beginning, even before the match, and it was great to see the West Ham fans out in force. The atmosphere inside Wembley was electric. We didn’t play our best football but at the end of the day we came and got what we wanted, which was the win and we are returning to where we feel we belong. You have to feel sorry for Blackpool because they played some good football but we got the ball into the back of the net and that’s what counts. What needs to happen now is the addition of a few new faces for both ourselves and the other promoted teams, Reading and Southampton. You have to have players with experience in the Premier League. You need to have a squad that is about 25 players deep that can compete with the rigours of the top flight and the West Ham board are saying that’s what they are planning on doing.A few of our key players need to have their contracts re-negotiated and once they have those players sorted out then they can go from there. Our nucleus is there and the summer will be interesting, not just for West Ham but all of the teams.* * * *The Champions League final was a very fascinating one to say the least. Chelsea did what they had to do. Bayern Munich created a lot of chances but couldn’t put the ball in the back of the net.I was glad to see Chelsea win because I feel it’s good for English football. When you look at the country standings in terms of European titles, England are a few behind the Spanish clubs and this will help catching them. Some people may say that the best team didn’t win on the day but if you don’t score you can’t win and they had so many chances it was ridiculous.A player like Didier Drogba can change the game. He had one or two chances, he took the one that mattered the most. Then he scored the decisive goal in the shoot-out.The turning point was Arjen Robben’s missed penalty. You can’t afford to miss chances like those and most would say if Franck Ribery had been on the pitch he would have taken it, but what’s done is done.Had they scored that spot kick they could have knocked the stuffing right out of Chelsea and won the title. But they weren’t able to do it and they can thank goalkeeper Petr Cech for doing his job. He is a big man to score past and he did his job well. You can look at the substitution of Thomas Muller and say he shouldn’t have come off but they had so many chances to win the game that shouldn’t have made a difference.Everyone in the Bayern team felt the pressure because they were playing at home and were expected to win.* * * *With the season done, we can all look back and think about the most memorable moments but without a doubt it was the Manchester City/QPR game where City needed to score two late goals and got them.It typified what the season had been like all year. With the league title on the line and knowing that your fiercest rivals, Manchester United, had won, City were under enormous pressure and you’ve got to tip your hat to them.I have never seen a league season like this one that came down to goal difference and its showed that every team can beat the other on any given day. It was great to see.Former Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola is now considering moving to the Premier League and the move would be great for him. He has a great track record but with a great team. The Premier League is different in a sense that the top team can lose to the bottom team opposed to other European leagues where the lower clubs get whipped on a regular basis.
