Lessons from LeBron
Is it really the end of June already? It sure doesn’t feel like June 29 it’s been downright chilly lately. Try riding a moped late at night through damp areas like Warwick Pond, Devonshire, etc. Can’t wait til July, my birthday month, when things really heat up.Speaking of the heat, congratulations to the Miami Heat who just won their second NBA Championship. Congratulations also to LeBron James for silencing his critics and finally winning that elusive NBA title. This young man’s journey to being a champion is an example of how to overcome adversity, ignore your haters and achieve success. More on this after the Top 20.Still holding it down at the top of the pops is Glad You Came, by The Wanted. Holding at #2 is Starships by Nicki Minaj.Advancing to #3 this week is Boyfriend by Justin Bieber. Falling to #4 it’s Give Me All Your Luvin’ by Madonna featuring Nicki Minaj and MIA. Falling to #8 is the hot dance track by Chris Brown and Rihanna, Turn Up The Music.Improving to #9 is Birthday Cake by Rihanna and her former loverboy Chris Brown.Improving to #10 is Rihanna’s other hit, Where Have You Been?, a well produced dance track by the hottest and most in demand entertainer on the planet. Dancehall still runs ‘tings, but it is good to hear some singing reggae that one can actually understand. What a song! Interesting lyrics. In at #19 is She Doesn’t Mind by Sean Paul. New at #20 is Link Up by Destra, a soca anthem for 2012!Now back to this week’s word. I follow sports very closely and cannot understand why people dislike LeBron James so much. The guy is a superstar basketball player who the media crowned as a king before he shot his first hoop in the NBA. He was drafted by the Cleveland Cavaliers, his hometown team. They paid him a very good salary, because that’s what he was worth in the free enterprise system that is the western world. He played out his entire seven-year contract, played hard and tried to win. For seven years he waited and asked for help. The best help he ever got in seven years was a washed up, fat, tired and old Shaquille O’Neal who could only manage approximately eight rebounds and eight points per night, in some 15 minutes of limited duty. Cleveland is a small market, when compared to NY, LA, Chicago and even Miami. But LeBron made more money for the Cavaliers’ franchise than they made before him on a yearly basis and probably more than they will make yearly after his departure. So the guy takes the team to the NBA finals once and loses because he doesn’t have enough help. Any team that has ever won an NBA title had at least two or three all-star calibre or superstar players.I don’t blame him for leaving Cleveland; he would probably never have won a title so soon or maybe ever. That team was going nowhere, even with him.I will agree that announcing where he was going to play in a live ESPN special was a bad idea. Hope he fired that advisor, publicist or whoever came up with that not so bright idea. But the same people who criticised him for his announcement on ‘The Decision’, were happy to charge advertisers outrageous prices for a 30-second spot. The same people who criticised ‘The Decision’ have made no mention of the scholarships to the University of Phoenix or the funds given to inner city kids through the Boys and Girls Club of America as a result of money raised. There are many lessons to be learned from LeBron’s journey:1. Definitely be the advocate for your own career and do what is best for you and your family2. Don’t worry about the haters; mostly they are negative people who have issues in their own lives which gives them too much time to worry about yours.3. Be relentless and persistent, never give up until you achieve your dreams4. Be focused, without focusing on your desired end state, you are unlikely to get there.5. Take good care of your body; it is the temple of God and if treated well can do amazing things.6. Be careful from whom you take advice and always get a second or even a third opinion on important matters.7. Be humble, humility is preferable to arrogance and much easier to defend.8. Be gracious in victory and in defeat.9. Don’t get too high or too low; too happy or too sad; try to stay even-keeled, centred.10. Remember that you CAN have the life and anything you want; you just have to go out there and get it!Peace ... DJLT.
