It is Cup Match month and the focus in St. George's should be the classic, but the turmoil surrounding their football programme has created a distraction.A club that should be a pinnacle for other clubs to emulate is far behind the eight ball in both sports.Management got the Richard Todd debacle totally wrong and Cup Match preparations appear to also be in disarray. Somerset would surely welcome any distraction that might allow them to wrestle the cup away from the champions . . . although I doubt St. George's would take their eye off the prize.After reading yesterday's article about Todd, it baffles and sickens me to try and understand how this could happen. I know how hard Richard worked last year to keep St. George's afloat in the Premier Division.Here is a guy who spent literally six days of the week at the club with every age group in an effort to help build a successful programme. I am sure he and his family is asking what was the point, as they have been subjected to the disrespect, unprofessionalism and disregard for his time, proficiency and commitment to the club's entire football programme.He and his coaching staff had goals and targets to meet and met them exceedingly well, causing St. George's Cricket Club to be seen as a well-respected football team in the Premier Division.Over the last three years Richard has been driven to work tremendously hard to construct a solid foundation from which he was hoping to build off this year.Sadly, this will not be the case as the club have failed to renegotiate his contract. Always wanting to have things in place, Richard had been approaching management since October, 2011, requesting a meeting to sit down and iron out his contract in the hope of having an agreed document by December, 2011, as this was the last year of the contract. Unfortunately for St.George's, they failed to take this part of the running of the club seriously and are now scrambling around trying to meet with him to rectify the problem.TOO LATE! His contract has now expired and Richard sent a text informing his players of his intentions to move on.'Wow' is all I can say, and part of me wants to think this is a direct and deliberate reaction to Richard contesting the presidency earlier in the year. Yet another part of me thinks it is just the normal unprofessional, poor management skills, and people just simply taking things for granted.The saddest part to all of this is that what took three years to build up will be broken down in three days.Already players have secured a release with uncertainty surrounding coaching, and others are rumoured to be following suit.St. George's are at risk of losing significant numbers and valuable players. How will they rebound from this? Who will take over the coaching duties for this soccer season? Will this be the demise of St. George's? Regardless of their downfalls, I surely hope not!I truly hope that the newly appointed committee works meticulously, conscientiously and diligently to bring back integrity, reliability and dependability to the management team.At the AGM there was such a mass following in support of the president, some even suggesting they would donate large amounts of money to help bail the club out. So I challenge those members . . . action speaks louder than words.On the cricket side of things, it is July and St. George's have just named their selection committee. Is Herbie Bascome the coach or George Cannonier?By the looks of the selection panel, I would have to think that George has been chosen as the head coach as he is listed as the chairman. In my opinion the coach should be the chairman, simply because he is the one responsible for the team on the day.Therefore, if the selectors are voting and it's two votes to two, the chairman/coach should have the last say, making that final, crucial decision. In terms of the selection panel I think they have an excellent group of former players, all well experienced, who at the end of the day should come up with a good team.I am sorry to hear that my captain, Oronde Bascome, will miss this year's Cup Match due to an operation. I want to wish him a speedy recovery and hope that he gets well soon. In his absence St. George's have picked Lionel Cann as his replacement, which is definitely the right decision. Lionel is without a doubt one of the best captains on the island.St. George's will need to make a minimum of three changes as OJ Pitcher, Damali Bell and Oronde Bascome will all miss this years' classic. I was happy to see Treadwell Gibbons get a big score in the Cup Match trial. He is one of a handful of players who has had a respectable season, thus far.Regardless of my concerns and disappointment with the club, I want to wish the St. George's executive well and hope they pull together and start rebuilding the club's reputation.I leave you with words from Richard Todd's presidency platform: “One club, one community”.
