The dangers of political addiction
Let’s be clear up front. The word addiction in this article has nothing to do with illegal drugs or any other substances. Political addiction occurs when those who support a particular party in a democratic setting are unable to accept anything that is not favourable to their chosen representatives. This happens in many democratic jurisdictions around the world, and “my party, right or wrong”, continues to create huge problems in the quest to reach the high ground of honesty and integrity in dealing with a multitude of issues that affect millions of lives daily. As Bermuda approaches a general election and voters throughout our communities wrestle with the pros and cons of who to support, the PLP or the OBA, many struggle with what could be described as political addiction that blots out the ability to make a judgment based on facts, rather than party allegiance. It happens in just about every jurisdiction. The United States is currently in the grip of vicious political attacks and counter attacks, between Republicans and Democrats as that nation prepares to go the polls in November. Some of the attacks are very personal, to the point where voters have openly expressed disappointment at the negative tactics. It is one of the sad realities in most democratic jurisdictions. Crucial issues of the day like the economy, healthcare, and jobs seem to take second place to who will emerge victorious at the polls. Political addiction is like the smoker who knows it is harmful, but has no intention of abandoning the practice.Situations and conditions change, and in this world of instant electronic communication, as much information as possible should be placed before the voter in order to make better assessments before going to the polls. In a small jurisdiction like Bermuda, most Bermudians want change only when they are convinced that the current leadership has failed to meet expectations. It is really a matter of common sense. If someone is hired to do a job, and it turns out they are unable to meet the requirements, they are usually dismissed. In the world of politics, it is not as simple as that. Yet keeping someone in a responsible position who has highly questionable standards of transparency and accountability could result in a loss of trust and raises questions over leadership abilities. The Secret Service in the United States recently had no choice but to dismiss several officers who fell below expected standards while involved in the process of protecting the President on an overseas trip. Since this department protects the President and other public officials, trust is a major factor, and officials knew without quick action that trust would be lost.Governments should also be mindful that incidents that create a lack of trust can be damaging, especially when no clear answers are provided to remove lingering doubt.Over the years, Bermuda has grown into a diverse multicultural society, and most of the problems we face today cross all barriers. The number of those who cling to yesterday’s racial attitudes are unable to free their hands to take hold of the new day of diversity are dwindling. No one should simply ignore the past. On the other hand, any arbitrary attempts to insert racism into election tactics should be discouraged. You only have to look around Bermuda to see the new day taking shape in improved social relations. Have all the problems of the past been solved? Of course not, and there still is much to be done. But there has been progress.Illegal drugs, crime, dishonesty and negative attitudes are not restricted to any single group. As Bermudians we need to pause and reflect on where we are and where we want to go as a healthy, peaceful society. It is time to throw political addiction aside, and decide what is best for Bermuda during these challenging times. Democracy at least provides the opportunity for all to participate. The decision rests with us.
