All (constructive) feedback is very welcome:* The Rainbow Alliance of Bermuda is hosting Speak Out: An Open Forum tomorrow from noon until 2pm at Queen Elizabeth Park. This is their first open forum and it aims to provide safer spaces for LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer) people and their allies to express themselves, while giving people the chance to tell their stories and show their support. All are welcome, regardless of gender or sexual orientation. If you are interested in expressing yourself (can be through speech or song) or volunteering at this event, you can message them at rainbowalliancebda@gmail.com.* Tomorrow’s Voices Bermuda Autism Early Intervention Centre are hosting a special fundraiser tomorrow. I have a feeling that this one is going to make a lot of ladies very happy, as this will take the form of the Bermuda Premier Screening of Magic Mike. There are two different screenings, both at Speciality Cinema (6.15pm and 9.30pm), with the premier parties beforehand (5.15pm and 8.30pm). The ticket price includes the movie/party ticket, complimentary drinks and nibbles, and a special pre-show featuring Bermuda Magic Mikes and other treats. As if that isn’t enough beefiness, the after-party will be at Lemon Tree’s Cow in the Park Party, with special drink prices to anyone wearing their Magic Mike wristband. Tickets are $50 and on sale at Secrets and Demco Florists.* This month’s edition of the Bermuda Docs Weekend Film Series will be on Sunday, August 19. Tickets are $15 and available at Oceans Gift Shop or by phoning 297-7314.* CV Cafe and Sweet Saak Bakery are hosting a Teddy Bear’s Picnic on Saturday, August 25 from 11am until 1pm. Under-sevens are invited to bring their teddy, their favourite bear book and a blanket or chair to sit on to enjoy kiddie music and storytelling. The event is free with food from a special kid-friendly menu available for purchase and a small charge for any children who want their face painted.* This year’s DanceSations Annual Dance Showcase will not just include some of Bermuda’s most talented young dancers but will also include performances by Smooth Lue of Bermuda Magic. There will be two shows on Saturday, August 25, at 2pm and 7pm. Tickets are $20 and available from www.ptix.bm.* TROIKA Bermuda are bringing their latest production, Work in Progress #4: Once on this Island, to the Ruth Seaton James Centre for the Performing Arts. This show will be their first musical production and is a family-friendly (although not suitable for newborns) theatrical Caribbean adaptation of The Little Mermaid, running from Thursday, August 23 until Saturday, August 25, with the show starting at 8pm. Tickets are $30 in advance from www.ptix.bm, $40 on the door, $25 for students and $50 to $150 for donors.* A little more advanced that the bucket-and-spade castles that I create but the Bermuda Department of Tourism presents the 17th Annual Bermuda Sand Sculpture Competition on Saturday, September 1 at Horseshoe Bay. Sculpting begins at 10am and finishes at 4pm, followed by judging and an awards presentation with prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in various categories. Admission is free for both spectators and participants — contact bermudasandsculpture@bermudatourism.com if interested in participating.* There are only 131 days until Christmas but for The Garden Club of Bermuda that isn’t soon enough! Christmas in November, from 10am until 4pm on Saturday, November 17 gives an opportunity to visit Orange Valley, a historical Bermuda home reputed to be Bermuda’s most haunted house. The house will be decorated for Christmas by floral artists, with Christmas crafts, home baking and plants for sale, pony rides for children and more. Tickets are available on the day and cost $20 for adults, $10 for ten to18-year-olds and free for under-tens.
