Plenty of events on horizon
Hi folks,I can’t believe how quickly it changed from summer to full-on hurricane season. Thankfully, Leslie turned out to be a bit of a damp squib after all — here’s hoping we continue to be lucky and get through the rest of the season with no injuries or major damage (and wouldn’t it be nice for the bad weather to hit midweek instead of at the weekend for once?). Anyway, lots of Bermuda events coming up — here are the latest:* The latest Masterworks Artist in Residence Exhibit will feature Melissa Wishart showcasing her oil paintings in the Rick Faries Gallery. The official opening will be on Friday, September 14 from 5.30pm until 7pm and the exhibit will run until September 29. Entry is free and her artwork will be available for purchase. In addition, Melissa will be holding two oil painting workshops on Friday, September 21 and on Tuesday, September 25 from 10am until 1pm. The cost per workshop is $135 for members and $150 for non-members.* The PartnerRe Art Lecture Series continues at Bermuda National Gallery on Friday, September 14 at 6pm with Dr Isolde Brielmaier, Chief Curator of Exhibitions at the Savannah College of Art and Design. Dr Brielmaier’s lecture will be on the topic of The Acts of Looking: Explorations into Contemporary Photography and Video and will examine the innovative work of several prominent contemporary artists and the boundaries they push through their work. The cost is $10 for members and $20 for non-members. Dr Brielmaier will also host a workshop the following day, Saturday, September 15 from 10am until noon. The topic will be Spectatorship, Analysis and Active Engagement and aims to engage participants in a hands-on workshop that will analyse how we, as viewers, extract meaning from such dynamic works. The cost is $5 for members and $10 for non-members. Shakespeare in the Park: Macbeth will be performed at Fort Hamilton and directed by John Zuill. Bleacher seating is on first-come-first-served basis or you can bring your own blanket or compact lawn chair. There will be a bar with wine, beer and sodas before the show and at intermission with theatregoers also having access to Daylesford Theatre after the performance. The show will run from Thursday, September 20 until Saturday, September 29 (no show on September 24). In the event of inclement weather, a decision will be made 30 minutes prior to the 8pm curtain. Tickets are $25 and are available online at www.bmds.bm, at Daylesford Theatre (details of box office availability on their website), or at the gate (cash only) one hour before performances.* Schools To Know invite you to their International Boarding Schools Fair on Wednesday, September 26 and Thursday, September 27. Over 40 well-known and respected boarding schools from the USA and Canada are coming to the Fairmont Hamilton Princess to share their programme information with you. Between 4.30pm and 7.30pm on each evening, representatives will give you details on their programmes, facilities and financial aid opportunities. For more information, contact tory@schoolstoknow.com.* Who needs Broadway — the Gilbert & Sullivan Society of Bermuda are saving you the airfare as they are back with their annual October production. This year’s offering is the award-winning Mel Brooks musical, The Producers, which will run at City Hall Theatre from Thursday, October 4 to Saturday, October 13 (except on the 8). Performances will be at 8pm daily with a matinee at 3pm on Sunday, October 7. On Opening Night, there will be a complimentary cocktail reception in the foyer.
