As usual, once the weather starts to cool a little, more organised events start popping up:* Ten Cafe & Bar are bringing you a little taste of the Land of the Rising Sun with their Bento Box and Sake Evening on tonight from 7pm. Chef Mike Knight will prepare a dinner inspired by Japanese cuisine, including a special Japanese Cocktail called the Ginger Ninja, and Burrows Lightbourn will be providing a selection of sakes for sampling (try saying that five times fast). The cost is $75 per person and reservations can be made by contacting 295-0857 or ten@yellowfin.bm.* Tomorrow night, September 28 is the opening night of MindFrame & PhotoVoice, an exhibition of art and photography by the service users of the Mid-Atlantic Wellness Institute. The opening reception will be at the Bermuda Society of Arts at City Hall (BSoA) from 5pm until 7pm and the exhibition will run until Wednesday, October 10.* Dancing is a great way to meet new people and get some exercise but if you've been a little nervous about signing up for a whole course, here's a great opportunity to have a little taster. Sabor Dance School are offering an evening of free introductory classes tomorrow night at the Berkeley Cultural Centre. Salsa will be from 5.30pm until 6pm, followed by Bachata from 6.15pm until 6.45pm, Hustle & Ballroom from 7pm until 7.45pm and Tango from 8pm until 8.30pm A discounted registration fee will be offered to anyone who registers on the night for their classes that commence the week of October 1. PALS is a registered charity which provides professional hands-on care and support to cancer patients primarily in their own homes and they ask that you round up your friends, family and co-workers to donate $5 to wear their hair in a mad or crazy way for the day. Suggestions include wigs, funny hats and scarves, crazy hair creations or designs, big ribbons, headbands or clips in your hair, big ties and funky glasses or your own hair in a funky style. This will take place at the Mid-Ocean Ampitheatre at the Fairmont Southampton and will feature performances by Rochelle Simons Lecomte, The Dynamic Duo, Stevie Darrell, Steve Easton, The Keya Dancers, Rapper J Silva, Kaelin Cox as MJ, Rovonne Roberts, Verlancia Aberdeen, "Sparkle" featuring Shelia Smith, Chandra Maybury, Latosha Coddrington, S.D.A Praise Team, The 3D T2S Band, Magician Lu Simons, and "The Kids". From 3pm until 6pm, there will be food (supplied by local vendors) and music from local artists including Big Snipes, Bro Richie from Trinity Sound and others. Havana Tap follows Bermuda tap star Mitchelle Trott as he takes his first trip to Havana, Cuba in search of a music teacher and to take tap lessons. Admission is $10, tickets are available at the gate and proceeds will benefit the Giant Steps Band tour to Havana in December 2013. The First Annual Jazz Caravan will be on Sunday, September 30. This will start at 4pm at The Leopards' Club and will feature the Giant Steps Band. Tickets are $50 and available from Music Box or at the door.* A great opportunity to celebrate the diversity in Bermuda — after a couple of postponements this year, CultureFest: Unity in the Community will finally be taking place on Saturday, September 29 and Sunday, September 30 from 1pm until 9pm each day. This free community event in Royal Naval Dockyard is dedicated to the things that unite us (music, food, art and entertainment) rather than the things that divide us, and includes live entertainment, the international food court, cultural and visual arts exhibit and a traditional Bermudian village. Saturday features a 10K Walk the Talk for men and their children followed by an official opening ceremony. Sunday, September 30 until Saturday, October 6 is the 2nd Annual Making Hunger History Week, an Island-wide food collection for various charities who feedBermuda’s hungry. All businesses, schools and interested groups are invited to participate by contacting the Eliza DoLittle Society on 333-4483 or info@elizadolittle.bm to request a donation box. The box can then be used to collect donations of non-perishable food items which will be collected by Daily Bread drivers during the second week of October. All donated food will be distributed to charities who provide meals and/or food supplies year-round to Bermuda’s hungry and needy. These charities include the Salvation Army, Centre Against Abuse, St. Vincent DePaul Society, STAR, Coalition for the Protection of Children, FOCUS, Seventh Day Adventist Food Bank, St. John’s Food Bank.* In honour of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre have organised a whole host of events throughout October, beginning with the Opening Ceremony at City Hall on Monday, October 1. This will be at 12 noon and all are welcome to attend. Friday, October 5th is Wear it Pink Denim Day — get your organisation involved, wear pink or denim and make a donation. To register, contact info@elizadoolittle.bm by September 26.* Chant artists David Newman (Durga Das) and Mira invite you to join them at Spirithouse for Kirtan College, an in-depth course on the ancient practice of Bhakti Yoga and Kirtan (chanting). All are welcome and no musical experience is required. The course will run from Thursday, October 4 until Saturday, October 7 and costs $450, which includes tuition, vegan meals, yoga and the Kirtan Concert on the Saturday evening. Their 1st Annual Oktoberfest Beer and Bavarian Food Tasting Fundraiser will be from 5.30pm until 8.30pm and the Queen Elizabeth Hall (QEH) will be transformed into a traditional Bavarian Beer Hall for the night. This event is for over-18s only and, in addition to a variety of beers (including genuine Oktoberfest beers) to sample, festival-goers will also enjoy authentic German pub music while eating brats with sauerkraut (I’m assuming they mean the traditional sausage and not naughty pupils), authentic German pretzels, spaetzle and schnitzel. If you’ve been looking for an excuse to wear your lederhosen, here’s your chance as there will be a contest for the most authentically dressed man and woman. All proceeds will go to the BHS Charitable Trust.* The Bermuda Guild of Stitchery will be hosting a special PALS fundraiser on Saturday, October 6 at the First Baptist Church Hall. From 10am until 3pm, they will have a show of needlework as well as handmade items for sale. The cost of admission is $5, which includes light refreshments and children under five get in for free.* Now in its 15th year of supporting women’s causes in Bermuda, the PartnerRe Women's 5K Run & Walk for 2012 will be on Sunday, October 7. This event is for women only and the Juniors 2K will begin at 8.30am with the 5K run beginning at 9am from the Botanical Gardens. Race awards include thousands of dollars in prizes for all age categories, plus draw prizes and five Grand Draw prizes. There are also gift bags and T-shirts available for the first 1,000 registrants. The entry fee ranges between $5 and $30, depending on whether or not you are a MAAC member, whether you are a runner or a walker and your age. TEDxBermuda, from the TEDx programme of local, self-organised events, are having their next event at the Fairmont Southampton on Saturday, October 13. From 1pm until 6pm, attendees will have the opportunity to listen to inspirational local and international speakers, including Jessica Lewis (Bermuda Paralympian), Nerman Seeff (Understanding Creativity), Ross Stein (Defeating Earthquakes), Hanli Prinsloo (I Am Water), Sossina Haile (Fuel From The Air), Peter Bentley (embracing Chaos) and many more. For more information, see www.tedxbermuda.com.* Bermuda's own world champion, Teresa Perozzi, will be taking a big gamble that we'll all be rooting to pay off for her on Saturday, October 13. Teresa will be putting her WBA World Middleweight Title on the line and also vying for the WBC World Middleweight Title to become the undisputed Women's Middleweight Champion of the World. Teresa will battle undefeated American Tori Nelson and will get All the titles if she wins and Nothing if she loses. All or Nothing: WBC & WBA World Middleweight Championship will be in the Poinciana Room at the Fairmont Southampton and promises ten international boxing and kick-boxing bouts. The undercard will feature Bolivia's Jennifer "The Bolivian Queen" alinas against USA's Karen Dulin, Bermuda's Sentwali Woolridge against Canada's Daniel Kechego plus many other Bermudians battling international stars. Doors open at 7pm and the first bout is at 8pm. Tickets cost $65 for general admission or $95 for ringside and are available The International Sports Shop or Gorham's or online at www.ptix.bm.* The next event from the Caledonian Society of Bermuda will be a cinema screening at BUEI on Sunday, October 14. The chosen film is the 1983 classic, Local Hero, a comedy-drama, directed by Bill Forsyth and starring Burt Lancaster and Peter Riegert. As if the film itself isn't enough of a draw, Harbourfront are offering a 15 percent discount on the regular menu to any filmgoers who dine there afterwards.
