Bermuda has talent to qualify for World Cup

Sitting at Wembley stadium watching England v San Marino in a World Cup qualifier, had me daydreaming, wondering if Bermuda will ever accomplish what seems mission impossible and actually qualify for the football World Cup? As my mind continued to wander, I visualised and could foresee Bermuda playing on that stage in the near future.Bermuda, I don’t think we recognise the talent we have in our country from both a player and coaching standpoint. We have the resources to make it happen, but has anyone tapped into the dream and verbalised the vision to all parties concerned? Are we working towards any specific goal or time frame to try and make it work, and what are we willing to sacrifice as individuals and as a country to try and make this happen? We currently have one of the most talented crop of footballing youngsters than we have had in many years, but the question is are they going to go down in history as just having potential for Bermuda’s success, or will they be brought into the fold with a concrete plan to make it all happen for us. They have proven that they have the skill, drive, passion and commitment to reap success. Now what Bermuda need to do is divulge their plan forward and not wait until a tournament is coming up before we start to prepare. For the first time in the history of Bermuda football have we had so many current professional players, Freddy Hall, Nahki Wells, Jonte’ Smith, Reggie Lambe, Dale Eve, and Taurean Manders. That’s practically half of a team, and there are several others that can join them who are either on trials or football scholarships at prep schools and universities.Football has evolved in the USA, and the level that these youngsters in prep schools and universities are playing at, is of a high standard and the coaching in top notch. What these players will gain from their experience in the USA is the tactical aspect of the game, which bodes great for us here for the national setup, giving us every opportunity for real success in the future. What we do in the next eight years with Bermuda football is crucial. These young men along with others that are on the brink of the same feat have what it takes to mount a serious challenge for a World Cup place. Some of you may be saying I am a dreamer, but that’s ok. I believe, if you can dream it, you can achieve it. What we need is for the executives, coaches and players of the Bermuda Football Association to believe in the dream and give it their best shot to make it happen. Mediocrity in any part of the Association just won’t do.In the past when we have come close to making it to the next round in the qualifying stages for the World Cup I have to say the Bermudian atmosphere was exceptional, it brought the country together for that moment. People who hadn’t come out to support football for many years came out in full support. We waved our flags, shouted in support, blew our air horns, and even did a stadium wave.As a sportsman that is one of the few times I can say I saw Bermudians come together and display national pride. Hence sitting at Wembley listening to the support that England received, I could literally see and hear the shouts of support for our own.BFA, our local players have the raw talent they just simply need exposure at a higher level. There are so many options in getting our players overseas at a young age where they can really learn the craft and understand the commitment involved. Continue to give our youngsters these opportunities not only in the USA but in the UK as well. This will improve the physical and mental game of the players, making it easier for our national coach to do what he does best, and in the long run this will enhance our chances of qualification. After the eight years is said and done we want to look back as a country and know we did all we could to qualify, and that we left no stone unturned. Don’t miss the boat on this one, and be our own worst enemy. This time around let’s make sure we get it right and give this group of young talented footballers the right tools to be successful.
