Di Matteo success still not good enough for Abramovich
What a strange week it has been at Chelsea Football Club.Roberto Di Matteo, who did superbly well last season, winning the European Champions League and the FA Cup, has been axed and replaced by former Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez until the end of the campaign.I believe Benitez is Chelsea’s ninth manager since the ruthless Roman Abramovich became owner in 2003 which I find quite staggering.I mean, I know Chelsea are on the verge of crashing out of the Champions League after losing 3-0 to Juventus in midweek, but I didn’t think Di Matteo was doing a particularly bad job. It’s a shame for him but that’s what happens when you have an owner like Abramovich who takes no prisoners. It’s his money, though, so I suppose he can do what he wants, but it doesn’t sit well with me.At least Di Matteo will get a decent pay-off as he still has two and a half years to run on his contract. He certainly won’t have to worry about money. As for his replacement, Benitez has won the Champions League so he knows what it takes at this level.I think Benitez’s biggest challenge will be getting Fernando Torres playing for Chelsea as he did for Liverpool.Torres has been a huge flop for the £55 million he cost that’s a lot of money to spend on one player who has barely scored ten goals since he joined the Blues. We do know that Torres is a very good player, his track record has proven that but he just hasn’t been able to produce the goods for Chelsea.Former Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola has still been linked to take over at Stamford Bridge in the summer but I think he would the job very different to when he coached the Spanish giants.Another coach under some pressure is Manchester City’s Roberto Mancini. For the second successive season City’s Champions League campaign has ended in the group stage. However, people need to understand that playing in Europe is entirely different to playing in the Premier League. In England the pace is very hectic and physical while in Europe the game is more measured and there’s a lot more ball manipulation. If you can’t do that you tend to struggle but it must be remembered that this is only City second season in the Champions League and it’s still very much a learning curve for their players.I was very pleased to see English referee Mark Clattenburg cleared of making a racist remark towards Chelsea’s John Obi Mikel. The Blues claimed Clattenburg used inappropriate language towards midfielder Mikel, but I don’t think the referee would have done anything like that.I’m still longing for the day when we can play the beautiful game without having to worry about racism.
