Cup success rests with five key players

As 2013 closes in, so does the America’s Cup and it is vital that Stephen Outerbridge and Arnold Manders are able to motivate the team picked to represent us.While every player has to play their role the following five are key to Bermuda’s success. Delyone Borden, Justin Pitcher, Dion Stovell, Malachi Jones and Chris Douglas all need to show up with their ‘A’ game.In my opinion, their performances can make or break us. Each one of them is gifted with loads of talent but my concern is their focus and whether or not they will make themselves available. When they are 100 percent focused on cricket they are categorised as elitist in their specialities. They have been known to drift and become disinterested but hopefully not this time around as we need them at their best.Last week I quoted Knute Rockne as saying, “The secret is to work less as individuals and more as a team. As a coach, I play not my eleven best, but my best eleven”.So the question is will they be part of Bermuda’s eleven best or our best eleven? There is a big difference, and no one could argue against them being categorised as five of Bermuda’s eleven best. However, this is a team sport and they need to be part of Bermuda’s team that showcases a oneness in our best eleven.Borden brings versatility to the team and experience. Delyone can bat anywhere from one to eight. He has proven time and time again that he is one of Bermuda’s best spinners and he is very sharp in the field. His all-round ability is a trait that a captain and coach dream of.However, Delyone for some reason has lost interest over the last year or two and hasn’t played much international cricket. Hopefully Arnold and Stephen can convince him to be a part of this team because his bowling at the National Stadium where the wicket turns practically square will be an added bonus for Bermuda. If he doesn’t make himself available it will be a tremendous loss but the show must still go on.Pitcher is another gifted player with oodles of ability but I don’t think he realises how much better he could be if only he was focused and worked harder at his game.Justin has raw pace and is an explosive late order bat, which is always a bonus to any team. He needs to be more committed to training and be willing to listen more so that he can further enhance his ability. While ability is one thing attitude and passion is another. These two things separate the average player from the elite player. I challenge Justin to come training with the right attitude and approach and I can guarantee him his game will improve tremendously and he will contribute more towards Bermuda’s success.Stovell is one of the most talented players Bermuda has and his all-round ability has become a huge bonus for Bermuda over the years. Dion’s mental approach towards international cricket has seen him prosper at the highest level where others have faltered. However, he needs to be more supportive and encouraging of his team-mates, and find a balance between his confidence and over confidence. If he can continue to concentrate on tweaking his craft he can become a positive role model for others. I have no doubt that if he comes mentally prepared he can be one of the players of the tournament.Jones is probably the most naturally gifted player Bermuda has ever seen. His bowling display against the MCC at Somerset last year was the best bowling display I have ever seen by any Bermuda bowler. It is this talent that Bermuda needs to see more consistently, but consistency comes from commitment. The more he works at his game, the more he puts out in training, the better he will be for Bermuda.Malachi is his own worst enemy. He cheats himself and Bermuda short because he doesn’t commit himself 100 percent to the cause. He has the potential to lead Bermuda to Division Two and I want to encourage him to train harder than he ever has so that this can become a reality.Last but not least is Douglas. He is one of my favourite players on local soil. He makes batting look so easy. When Chris is on top of his game and focused on cricket he is hands down one of the best batsmen in Bermuda. He has an ability that is special but we have only seen glimpses of it. Chris needs to make a special effort to train like he has never trained before for Bermuda. As an opener he has one of the most important jobs in the team.Chris and Dion opening together left and right-hander, aggression and finesse makes a perfect pairing. Chris has to inwardly want this if he is to show Bermuda his qualities. It’s been a long time coming and so I ask will the real Chris Douglas please stand up and be all that he can be come April, 2013.Some may say why have I singled these five out when a team consist of 11 players. These five, in my opinion, have not showcased to Bermuda their true potential and if we are to be successful and qualify in the top two we need all of them at their best. However, as the quote says if they or any of our other so called elite players think they are bigger than the team then Arnold and Stephen have to leave them out. Team always comes before individuals and players have to understand their role in the team and be willing to sacrifice themselves for their team.If this is done I have no doubt Bermuda can and will be successful.
