Healthcare costs would drop if we were all healthier
Last week we were talking about how fitter and healthier people are usually happier and also don’t drive up the cost of healthcare. We have a group of people who are healthy and who don’t drive up costs and we have another group that is unhealthy, lead unhealthy and unsustainable lifestyles, and drive up costs with treatments, procedures, medications and services that would not be necessary if these people were healthy.I will not today present numerical data to support this assertion, but the logic of the concept is sound.Take the concept further. If more and more people became healthier and required less medical treatment, services and products, the doctor’s bills would decline, fewer medications would be purchased, fewer heart surgeries would be necessary. The list goes on of services and procedures which wouldn’t be so frequently required if more people were healthy. Now, the controversial bit. It is alleged, that doctors get commissions or some type of financial benefit or compensation for recommending medications or well certain types of medications. If this is true, doesn’t it seem possible that a doctor would be inclined to recommend the medications that provide said remuneration a bit more than necessary? I’m just asking a question?I don’t believe that there is sufficient evidence to prove that this is not the case and there isn’t sufficient evidence to prove that this is the case. So we have a hung jury on this one, but I suspect that there may be something in this. So I went to the trusty internet for answers. Guess what I found?Drug makers acknowledged that they routinely made payments to insurance plans to increase the use of their products, to expand their market share, to be added to lists of recommended drugs or to reward doctors and pharmacists for switching patients from one brand of drug to another. There are perks in all jobs and I suspect that this is probably just one of the perks of being in the medical profession. It sounds more like lunches, dinners, maybe even a trip somewhere. We are guessing at this but I suspect that there really isn’t enough in this for doctor’s to get rich. The main issue here is the cost of healthcare and I hate to sound like a broken record, but it strikes me that the best and easiest way to reduce the cost of healthcare is for people to just simply take better care of themselves, adopt a more healthy and sustainable lifestyle; which includes eating healthier, exercising regularly, not consuming too much alcohol and definitely not using drugs, drinking plenty of water and monitoring their health.A really important aspect of healthy living is to pass on the importance of living healthily to our children, grandchildren, relatives and friends, so that everybody can live healthier lives, longer lives and have a good quality of life as we age. The healthier we are; the less expensive we are to the healthcare system and this is an easy way to bring down the cost of healthcare.
