There were a lot of deals made during the transfer window which closed on Thursday night, but the one that some people are talking about is the one that didn’t go through at all and the behaviour of the player, Peter Odemwingie of West Bromwich Albion.The striker had made it know that he was interested in a transfer to Queens Park Rangers and so confident was he that the deal was going through that he drove down to London, right down to Loftus Road, home of QPR. Club officials told him that they could not talk to him as they didn’t have permission from West Brom, so the trip was in vain and the deal never went through. And when he showed up for training yesterday he was sent home by club officials.The player, whose goals over the last two seasons have helped keep the club in the top flight, isn’t likely to be involved in Sunday’s match at home to Tottenham and has no doubt damaged his reputation at the club to the point that he is likely to finish the season and then get his desired transfer. If QPR stay up they will probably try to sign him again in the summer, if not would he even want to join a relegated team? Peter has said the move isn’t about the money but for what other reason would a player leave a comfortable mid-table team to join a club at the bottom of the Premier League?Players have to understand you are under contract to a club and you can’t just take it upon yourself to go and try to do a deal without both clubs agreeing. I think he was out of order for doing that. I’m sure he can help QPR’s cause but it’s got to be done professionally and in the right way. That’s why he is in the situation he is in right now with the club, being sent home from training yesterday.Players are sometimes badly advised by their agents and that seems to be the case even more so now because there is so much money involved. You probably get one or two agents looking at the dollars rather than the player’s career and what is best for them. Players have to start paying more attention to that sort of stuff. You’re in charge and the agent is making money because of you and you have to be strong enough and stand up and let them know that this is the right way to do something or this is wrong.We had agents in my day, I had an agent in England where Bobby Moore, Trevor Brooking and I had the same fella representing us and he did a good job for us. And players need that because when it comes to talking off the field about things like contracts it is nice to have someone represent you. Nine times out of ten clubs will try to get you as cheap as they can. A bad agent could be bad for everybody, the player first and then the club.You want to be on good terms with the club and want to make sure that the agent is getting you the best contract you can possibly get. People have to understand that a footballer’s career is very short and as quick as you blink you eyes it is over. People are saying today that players are making too much money but I don’t quite agree with that because when you look at how short their careers are they have to make that sort of money to look after their future. It’s not like a doctor or lawyer whose career can go on for 30 years, a footballer’s is about ten years max and anything over that is a bonus.A guy like David Beckham has been blessed. Speaking of Beckham, I have to applaud him for what he is doing with his five-month contract at Paris St Germain by giving his salary away to a children’s charity in Paris. I think that’s a fantastic gesture and I think more players need to be doing stuff like that. He is a high profile player who has maximised his talent and now is financially secure. That’s what happens when you have a good agent. They know the opportunities that are out there and being married to Posh Spice of the Spice Girls all played a part in it. Beckham has done an excellent job of marketing himself, he’s world class, everybody knows him, his face is everywhere, is not a bad looking fella, is in good shape and all that plays a big part. Good luck to him.He’s 37 now but there no telling if or where he will be playing next season. If anybody can pull it off it will be Becks, he’s been around this long and who knows. He may be able to go somewhere and give some other club another six months.One player who hasn’t marketed himself so well at times is Mario Balotelli whose deadline day transfer back to Italy from Manchester City closes a controversial chapter on his career in England. He’s a stranger player and people have to look at him and understand that this was a little black kid adopted by an Italian family in Italy. It has been difficult for him to function at times and I think his club needs to try to get him some help because he is a fantastic talent, he’s proved he can play and for his age (22) he is one of the best players at his age in world football right now.His Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini, another Italian, was definitely patient with him but after two or three times you can only do so much. He has to take responsibility himself and if he needs help come out and say you need help. Don’t sit down and complain and moan when they take you off because that is not professional. I just think he needs somebody to put their arm around him and give him a good talking to. That ‘Why always Me’ T-shirt that he showed under his jersey one match certainly didn’t help his reputation.
