Women's cricket deserves to be taken seriously
The women’s World Cup cricket is currently being played in India with a number of countries vying to be world champions. I took time out this week to actually sit and watch some of the matches and was quite surprised at the quality of cricket being display.I was encouraged to believe that our own women cricketers could definitely reach this level one day.If we are going to invest in women’s cricket then we must look to restructure a few of the fundamental aspects of the programme. Something has to be done to attract the younger players. When I look into the middle and high schools there are some very talented, young ladies, with superb hand eye co-ordination who with the right coaching could become very good cricketers. The experience of watching the women play prompted me to catch up with Bermuda’s own women’s national team captain Terry Paynter to get her views on the women’s World Cup and Bermuda’s future as it relates to women’s cricket.Q: Do you have a favourite team that you support in the women's World Cup and why?A: I don't really have a favourite women's team, but would love for the West Indies to do well. It would be good for cricket in our region.Q: What team do you think will go on and win the women’s World Cup and why?A: It appears the Aussies came to play, but don't count England out. Sir Lanka could be upsetters as they are riding high and the West Indies have the ability if they can put it all together. Q: As Bermuda captain what do you think it would take for us as a country to reach those heights and one day play in the women’s World Cup, or is that an unrealistic goal?A: We first of all need a full time programme and more women to get involved. Maybe if the country supported women in sports like they do men we would go further.Q: What up and coming young players do Bermuda have that look very promising?A: We have a few in Reunna Richardson, Precious Smith, Rebecca Gibbons and the very young Jadea Steede-Hill to name a few.Q: Many people around the world don't think highly of women playing cricket, what would you say to them?A: I think women in sports struggle to get the recognition they deserve period, but for those people I would say watch the women's World Cup and see for yourselves.Q: If you could choose worldwide one person to coach your team for one session who would it be and why?A: I don't think one session with any one person will change a team. However financial support and a full time programme for the women would be a start and more competitions for the ICC Americas Region for women.Could we one day see a Bermuda women’s team in the World Cup? It took over 20 years for the men to do it, but it happened. So who is to say the same can’t be done with the ladies. It might take some time, but nothing is impossible, you must believe first. Once you believe, it is possible you can go out and achieve. However, like Terry pointed out, around the world including Bermuda, women’s sports are not rated in the same way as men’s sports. However, it is my belief that if we are going to invest even just one dollar then we must do it right. We must set in motion the necessary resources to allow these women the opportunity to grow and excel and become the best that they can be.Who knows five, 10, or even 15 years from now Bermuda’s women could be playing among the elite in the world. Anything in sports is possible!Quote of the week: In the world there are believers and then there are non-believers. For all of you non-believers out there, I have something to say to you ... never underestimate the heart of a champion.- Rudy Tom Johnavich
