Big names hogging the headlines
Some possible big-name transfers have dominated the headlines over the last couple of weeks, setting the stage for an interesting start to Premier League in England next weekend.Four players have been linked with moves — Wayne Rooney and his possible move from Manchester United where he appears to be unhappy, Gareth Bale and his possible record-breaking transfer from Tottenham to Real Madrid, Luis Suarez’s interest in leaving Liverpool and Cesc Fabregas, possibly moving back to England with Manchester United.Fabregas stated this week that he was happy at Barcelona and not at all interested in joining the English champions, so the speculation there has been put to rest for now. With the other three players we will just have to follow the developments over the next few weeks.United had stated that Rooney was not for sale despite Chelsea’s keen interest, while Arsenal’s reported 40 million pound bid for Suarez has been turned down by Liverpool. As for Bale, Tottenham may find it very hard to resist the kind of money being offered by the Spanish giants. One transfer to go through was that of United States striker Clint Dempsey who has left Spurs to return to the United States with Seattle Sounders. With Clint I always rated him as a player from his time with New England. I think he’s a very good player and only as an individual do you know when the time is right to make a move. Players have their reasons for wanting a move and you have to go with that. Also, if a player doesn’t want to stay, what’s the sense in keeping him. He could end up disrupting the harmony of the team and you are not going to get the best out of them.It doesn’t help that players these days are getting unbelievable sums of money and should really be appreciative of what they have. What some of them make in a week most people don’t make in a year. All that money doesn’t make you into the person you need to be. There’s no loyalty in football anymore. My thing is, you went to the club in the first place because you wanted to be there. If you are making 200,000 pounds a week and have won league championships, you’ve won FA Cups, European championships, then there is not much more to win.In Rooney’s case the only thing else to win is the World Cup and not everybody wins the World Cup in their lifetime or even plays in the World Cup, so you’ve got to be appreciative.I understand the club’s position, too, because they want to keep him because it is money for the club. People want to go and see players like Wayne Rooney and Gareth Bale because they are the hot tickets in England. What I would say to guys is if at the time you signed your contract you were happy then see your contract out.Mind you it is a business for the club and you should understand that going in as a professional. I tell people lots of times professional athletes are like race horses, as long as you are winning the race everybody wants you, but the minute your form dips nobody wants you. That’s the nature of the beast and players should accept that. With the climate in football today there shouldn’t be a lot of unhappy people because the money makes your future secure as long as long as you do what you need to do with it. If you are making what Rooney is reported making, around 250,000 pounds a week, which doesn’t include endorsements, and you are not happy then something is wrong.Players have to understand the club’s point of view, they are paying big, big money for players now. Look at Suarez at Liverpool, when he went to go to Liverpool everything was okay and now all of a sudden he wants to leave. Liverpool are a great institution and one of the biggest clubs in England, let’s take them back to where they used to be.Suarez can help to do that by honouring his contract. Players today have to understand it has to be a happy medium, you can’t be happy one minute and unhappy the next because things are not going your way. However, if Suarez doesn’t want to be there then let him go. The club most always come first. I’m not surprised Arsenal are interested in him because Arsene Wenger needs somebody who can score 25 to 30 goals a season. They haven’t got that and if they get that type of player they will be a good team again. In order to compete you need a proven goal scorer.I do understand Bale’s dilemma because Real Madrid are offering unbelievable money for him, somewhere around 100 million euros. In my mind no player is worth that money but if you want to pay it then they will take it. If I was at Tottenham I would tell them to sell him. He’s a good English player but again money doesn’t gurantee anything. He could go to Spain which has a different culture, different style of soccer and still not perform. Going to a different country is not easy, you have to understand the mentality of the people and have a strong mentality yourself. All these things you have to weigh up and pay attention to. The game is Spain is a lot more technical and tactical than in England where they like to knock the ball around. On the continent you not only have to be a footballer but a thinking footballer. Bale’s stock is very high right now but it could diminish quite quickly if he has one or two seasons when things aren’t going well. Good luck to him if he goes and I hope Spurs are able to find an adequate replacement.
