Unbeaten Roma flying under the radar
One team the world is not noticing is AS Roma. They have won every one of their games in the Italian League (Serie A).
Nine games, 27 points — that’s impressive not only in Italy, but in any league in the world.
Roma are enjoying an amazing start to the new season. It’s always tough in Italy, and it’s nice to see a team other than Juventus or Milan up top.
It isn’t a changing of the guard, not yet, but Roma aren’t in a European competition so that fact lends themselves to being better prepared for their next league game.
But there’s no side close to the Bayern team of last year, no matter who they are. Barcelona fans still licking the wounds from their thumping.
In England, there is no such thing as a ‘B’ team. We see that when teams such as Chelsea and Arsenal play in the League Cup, as was the case this week.
Every one of their players is top flight.
Arsenal’s team in the Capital One Cup would walk into any first team. Same with Chelsea.
Chelsea have the deepest squad in the league but Arsenal are the team on the run so it will be a case of who says ‘how bad do we want it?’
Today’s match between the top two — Arsenal and Liverpool — should be interesting. There are no favourites, only among the fans who support them. Both sides have to keep up the pace and that’s why it’s such an important game.
I tell people all the time that injuries decide a club’s fortunes.
They play a big part because of the number of games being played in a season. No club can treat any match as a friendly. They have to go out and win every game, or at least pick up a point.
But sometimes I don’t understand the mentality of these professional players. Often it’s all about the money, not the game.
The fans deserve so much more.
