Enjoy a film, tap dancing and dinner

In honour of Black History Month, BUEI are hosting a special screening of ‘Havana Tap’, Dale Butler’s film on talented Bermudian tap dancer, Mitchell ‘Live Wires’ Trott on Thursday, February 20. Follow Mitchell’s travels to Cuba to take lessons from an 84-year old Cuban tap dancer. Mitchell will open the evening with his spectacular tap dancing followed by the film, and a Q&A with Mr Butler and Mr Trott. Doors open at 6.30pm with Happy Hour prices on drinks at Harbourfront. The event itself will start at 7.30pm. Ticket holders are entitled to 20 percent off dinner at Harbourfront either before the lecture from 6pm, or afterwards. The culmination of an intensive one-week workshop, the Somersfield Primary department presents Harlequin, a children’s opera based on an Italian folktale on Friday, February 21 and Sunday, February 23 at Somersfield Academy. Harlequin is the story of how a little boy in Italy, during the period of the Renaissance, overcomes his fear of ridicule and learns the importance of self-confidence and friendship. This performance is co-directed by Judy and Sanford Jones, co-founders of Youth Opera International Inc., with Janice Pearman performing the Soprano. Showtime is at 7pm on the Friday and 5pm on the Sunday. Regular tickets are $25 for adults and $10 for children. Dinner and show tickets, which include a slice of pizza and drink, are $30 for adults and $15 for children. The St George’s Foundation is hosting what promises to be a fascinating lecture by Beau Evans on Wednesday, February 26. The First American War on Slavery follows the exploits of Captain Stephen Decatur after his loss of the USS President, which was captured by the British and towed to Bermuda in January 1815. It was during this action that Midshipman Richard Sutherland Dale was wounded and died shortly thereafter in St George’s, becoming the last casualty of the War of 1812. The lecture will be held at The World Heritage Centre on Penno’s Wharf. Wine will be on sale from 6pm and the lecture itself will start at 6.30pm. Admission is $10. The Family Centre invite you to Celebrate the Night at their annual fundraising event on Saturday, March 1. From 7pm until 11pm at Fourways Inn, you can enjoy a variety of entertainment, including Randy Lambert and Gavin Smith in the Peg Leg lounge, Gina Love & Friends and Toby Butterfield of Improv Bermuda in the Comedy Corner, late night Karaoke with Hugh Murray, Smooth Lew magic show, United Dance Production, DJ King Arthur and the dancefloor, Oh Snap! Registration is now open for the 8th Annual Lindo’s to Lindo’s 10K Run and four-mile walk on Sunday, March 9. Starting from Lindo’s Family Foods in Warwick at 8.30am, the run/walk will finish at Lindo’s Market in Devonshire. Registration costs vary between $20 and $40 depending on whether you are in the adult or junior category and whether you choose the competitive run, non-competitive run, competitive walk or fun walk. This is a fundraising event, with part proceeds going to the Bermuda Diabetes Association. Beau Rivage Restaurant are welcoming special guests from Harvard University in a unique performance on Sunday, March 16. The evening will begin with a complimentary cocktail party in L’Eau Bar at 7pm, followed at 7.30pm by a special four course dinner, with the menu created especially for the occasion by Chef Jean-Claude Garzia. Vocal a cappella groups the Radcliffe Pitches (all-female) and the Krokodiloes (all-male) will be providing the entertainment. The cost of the dinner is $85 plus 17 percent gratuities. Direct from Harvard, the legendary Hasty Pudding Theatricals will be returning to Bermuda once again to perform their unique brand of student-written theatre (kind of like pantomime for grown-ups with an all-male cast). This is their 166th production and the show, Victorian Secrets, will be on Wednesday, March 19 until Friday, March 22 at the Earl Cameron Theatre at City Hall. Showtime is at 8pm nightly. Tickets are $22 and available from www.bdatix.com.
