Learn essential skills to be your child’s education advocate

Have you ever wished you could play a more substantial role with the direction of your child’s education? ABC Services in conjunction with The Learning Disabilities Association of Bermuda is offering a workshop for parents on Saturday, March 1st. From 10am until noon in the MSA Auditorium, Educational Therapist Lindsey Lehman will present ‘Advocating For Your Child: What You Need To Know’. This workshop will show you how to effectively advocate for your child, covering everything from writing e-mails and notes, the proper way to call a meeting, dealing with administrators, and your rights as parents. It will also cover topical issues like arranging play dates and how to prepare for transitional years (foundation into primary, primary into secondary). Parents will feel prepared, armed with real-life strategies to help implement adaptations and recommendations from school, therapy, and learning support in their own home. Tickets are $30 and available from www.BDAtix.bm. For more information, contact abcservices@logic.bm or 296-8255.

For ladies with natural hair, one of the biggest problems they have is finding the right products. Not only can this end up pricey, but you can end up with shelves full of products that will never be used. Naptually Me has the solution to this problem with their first ever Nappy Hour and Product Swap at Chewstick on Friday, March 7th. This will run from 6pm until 9pm and is an opportunity to try a new product or stock up on your old favourites for free. Attendees can bring any products that they have but don’t use and swap them for products from other naturals. Entry is free but you must bring at least one product to swap.

Think you’re in pretty decent shape? Teams of two or four are invited to prove it by signing up for the Bermuda Triple Challenge from Friday, April 4th until Sunday, April 6th. This three-day challenge series is suitable for all levels of fitness, promising to be demanding enough for the elite, but achievable for all. Competitors are challenged to enjoy a high adrenalin excursion of Bermuda, its culture and history over three obstacle courses ranging between 4K and 10K in length. 99.9 percent of participants will finish and put themselves in the running for the $1,000 Grand Prize. The weekend is not all blood, sweat and tears though as, in order to win, teams will need to raise funds for the event’s designated charities. Points are award for each dollar raised in addition to completing each of the physical challenges. The combined challenge and charity points total will determine the overall weekend Bermuda Triple Challenge winner. The first event is the Urban Foot Race through the old Town of St George’s on Friday, April 4th from 7.15pm. No need to rush home afterwards though as this will be followed by a community block party with DJ D’General and walking tours with the Town Crier. The second is the Island Challenge at 9.30am on Bermuda’s south shore, including a visit to the Bermuda Regiment’s Assault Course at Warwick Camp on Saturday, April 5th. The series will finish with the Royal Challenge at 8.30am on Sunday, April 6th at Royal Naval Dockyard. The registration fee varies from $120 to $600, depending on whether you are entering a team of two or four, how many challenges you are signing up for and if you are an adult or youth team.
