From block parties to haunted histories

Front Street will be closed off from King Street to Court Street for the Kings of Construction Block Party on Friday, October 17th. The evening’s festivities will kick off at 7.30pm with the Kings of Construction Competition, consisting of five construction-related events such as Sand Shovel, Block Moving and Truck Pull. There will be six teams, each with five participants, and after running for around 1.5 hours, it will be followed by live music from the Go Down Berries and DJs from VIBE 103. Admission is free but there will be food stalls, a cash bar, street vendors and more, with proceeds to benefit the CAOB Scholarship Fund. For more information, contact Theresa on caob@logic.bm.

After their successful Open House event last week, Beyond Fitness Bermuda (BFB) are hosting the Grand Opening of Bermuda’s newest fitness facility from 10am until 4pm on Saturday, October 18th. In addition to the Grand Opening, the BFB team will also be participating in the worldwide fitness fundraiser, the One Hour Long Cycle (1HLC), Bermuda’s first ever fundraising event of its kind. 1HLC is an annual kettlebell lifting charity event that allows people from around the world to join each other for 60 minutes of continuous lifting in order to raise funds for an annual of charity. This year at 3pm (11am PDT), 1HLC is collaborating with Kettlebells 4 Autism (KB4A) to raise funds for the Association for Science in Autism Treatment (ASAT). Support a great local charity while enjoying a fabulous black tie event at A Gala Evening with Pinky on Saturday, October 18th. This major fundraiser for P.A.L.S. will take place in the Fairmont Southampton’s Mid Ocean Amphitheatre from 6.30pm and includes a cocktail reception, dinner and live entertainment, featuring Bermuda’s own Pinky Steede, supported by steel pan artist Robert Symons and comedian Bruce Barritt. The opening event for the Argo Group Gold Cup will be the Family Festival of Sail on Sunday, October 19th at Barr’s Bay Park. From 10am until 4pm, you can expect activities celebrating boating and the sea and fun entertainment for the whole family to enjoy. Some highlights of the day include a live broadcast by Hott 107.5, a children’ castle, face painting, free boat rides, a Bermuda Ocean Explorers Display, a Bermuda Underwater Exploration station, Bermuda Rowing Association simulators, Model Boat Association Races, a Fife and Drum presentation at 2.30pm, Calico Jack’s tours, an African Diaspora Heritage Trail feature about the Enterprise sculpture and site, and an RBYC Optimist Exhibition Youth Race in the Harbour at 1pm. Indigo are bringing Diwali, the Festival of Lights to Bermuda on Saturday, October 25th. Diwali is India’s biggest and most important holiday of the year and, to mark this occasion, Indigo are offering authentic Indian food at an all-you-can-eat buffet, with Bollywood music, festive lighting and cultural ambience from 6pm until 10pm. This family-friendly event will be on their back terrace and the cash bar will offer wine, beer and cocktail specials. Additional parking space is available at the Aquarium, with a shuttle service available. The cost is $40 per person, $20 for children aged 5 to 12 and free for children under 5. An opportunity to contribute to a tremendously worthy cause is coming up as Warwick Gas Station will be hosting its first 5K Family Fun Walk/Run on Sunday, October 26th to raise awareness of autism. The race will start at 9am in the parking lot at RUBiS Warwick. The entry fee is $10 or free for children under 15. All proceeds will benefit Tomorrow’s Voices, Bermuda’s Autism Early-Intervention Centre with part of the proceeds earmarked for the medical and therapy expenses of Eleah Basden, youngest daughter of local radio disc jockey B. Bourbon Street comes to Bermy for a fun-filled New Orleans-style Halloween party at The Reefs on Friday, October 31st. The New Orleans Halloween Masquerade and Costume Party will run from 6.30pm until 10pm, when you can enjoy a delicious multi-course dinner and New Orleans-style Jambalaya station before dancing the night away to the expert spins of DJ Travis. Enjoy a Halloween Party like no other at Bermuda’s own UNESCO World Heritage Site. Haunted History in Ye Olde Ghost Town will take place at The World Heritage Centre on Penno’s Wharf from 7pm until 11pm on Saturday, November 1st. Revellers can expect music, food, games, fortune tellers, raffles, and scary surprises, including ghost stories that will bring history to life. Tickets are $125 for St. George’s Foundation members, $150 for non-members and available at www.BDAtix.bm, GiMi on Front Street, and the World Heritage Centre.
