• The Department of Community and Cultural Affairs presents A Night of Poetry by 2010 Aldeburgh First Collection Prize-winning Caribbean author Christian Campbell at Bermuda National Gallery, City Hall, on Friday, June 19. The reception begins at 5.30pm, followed by a reading at 6pm. His debut book, ‘Running the Dusk’, not only gives insight into the hidden ambiguities of his mind, it also exemplifies his patience and perseverance as a young writer. Campbell laboured with the book of poetry for several years before it was ripe for publication, describing the process as “the time the book needed to become itself”. It was shortlisted for the 2010 Forward Poetry Prize for Best First Book in the UK and was also a finalist for the Cave Canem Prize.Campbell studied at Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar and obtained his PhD from Duke. His essays and poems have been published widely in the Caribbean, the United Kingdom and North America. • Enjoy some traditional pomp and circumstance as the Regiment Band joins the Bermuda Islands Pipe Band in performing a Beating of the Retreat Ceremony from 9pm on Front Street on Wednesday, June 24. The Beating of the Retreat, in its earliest form, was simply a drummers’ call. The Drum Major and his men would march around the camp or city streets playing drum taps to warn soldiers that it was time to return to their billets, put out their fires and go to bed. This performance was known as the retreat and many regretted that they did not heed the drummers’ call. Eventually, a pipe time was added to the drummers’ calls and a more elaborate ceremony emerged. Later on, bugle calls were added and the parade evolved into the present day Beating of the Retreat Ceremony. The massed bands march on, perform separately and then re-mass for the evening hymn and the playing of Sunset, at which the flags are lowered signalling the end of the day. The bands then march past the guest of honour — His Excellency the Governor, the Honourable Premier, Worshipful Mayors, et al. • The Bermuda Karate Institute is hosting the 15th Lepercq Memorial Tournament at 1pm at Pembroke Sunday School on Sunday, June 28. This open martial arts tournament for all levels and age groups is dedicated to the memory of Paul Lepercq for his contributions to the martial arts in Bermuda. This annual, week-long fashion celebration will run from Monday, July 6, until Saturday, July 11, and will include four international standard fashion shows featuring Bermuda’s retailers, salons, designers and of course, beautiful models. The week commences with the Hair & Beauty Show in the Earl Cameron Theatre at City Hall on Monday, July 6, where local salons will bring their creativity alive in a theatrical hair runway show. • Don’t have a boat for the Non-Mariners Raft-up yet? The Uber crew have been a central part of it for the past 20 years and invite you to join them for an UberVida Non-Mariners on Sunday, August 2. The boat will depart #1 Dock on Front Street at 10am, cruising up to Mangrove Bay. Arriving early means that they can better jockey for a central spot in the raft-up. After a full day of fun in the sun, including funnel races, pictures with the monkey and top international DJs, the boat will return to Hamilton at 6pm.
