Pomp and ceremony for Peppercorn tradition

• Calling all Italophiles, Discovery Wines promise an event that you won’t want to miss at their Italian Wine Tasting Dinner on Thursday, April 7. This special evening at Griffin’s Bistro at the St George’s Club will begin with prosecco being served by the pool from 6.30pm. Then, each delectable course of the six-course dinner will be paired with an Italian wine from Discovery Wines. The cost is $110 per person, which does not include gratuities. • Under the distinguished patronage of the Governor, George Fergusson, and his wife, Margaret Fergusson, the third annual Joyful Noise Concert will take place on April 9. From 6pm until 8pm, you can enjoy a gospel concert in the Christ Anglican Church Devonshire with vocalists, dancers and more. After the concert, there will be refreshments in the TN Nisbett Hall. Tickets are $10 each, with a donation requested during the concert. ALL funds raised are designated for the restoration of Christ Anglican Church Old Church (at the junction of Brighton Hill and Middle Road Devonshire). • If you like Dancing With The Stars or So You Think You Can Dance, then you won’t want to miss the World Pro-Am Ballroom and Latin Championship, World Professional Superdance Cabaret on Saturday, April 9. Presented by World Promotions Inc. the largest dance competition company in the world, this event was held a few years ago at the Fairmont Southampton and was a sold out, huge success. Bermuda will be represented by local amateur Nancy Duperreault and the show will begin at 8.30pm in the Fairmont Southampton’s Poinciana Ballroom. • Those of you who love olde worlde-style pomp and ceremony will be happy to know that the Peppercorn Ceremony Bicentennial will be on Wednesday, April 20. A firm fixture on the Bermuda calendar since 1816, this year will mark the the 200th anniversary of this quaint annual tradition. Starting from 10am in King’s Square in St George, this event surrounds the ceremonial payment of the annual rent of one peppercorn for the continued use of the Old State House, Bermuda’s oldest building, in “free and common soccage” by the Master of Lodge St George #200, on the Roll of the Grand Lodge of Scotland. The Governor, George Fergusson, in all his ceremonial finery, inspects the band and troops of the Bermuda Regiment while the master, officers and brethren of Lodge St George parade on to the square in full Masonic regalia. • Offering a variety of yoga styles accessible to new beginners and regular students, the Bermuda Yoga Festival 2016 is a three-day yoga and music festival running from Friday, April 29 until Sunday, May 1.
