Miracles can happen in most unlikely places

Saxophone by the sea: Tino from Bermudian band DIA

I believe that whatever happens in our lives, we must keep an eye out for miracles.

After two grey weeks of rain, last weekend was absolutely stunning. Brilliant sun in a bright blue sky, and unusually warm for January. It’s just amazing how good weather can bring so much happiness. I awoke with a renewed sense of happiness, and I felt lighter and more alive as Bermuda magically transformed into its vibrant, colourful self.

I decided to go for a walk on Warwick Long Bay Beach. To my surprise, I was completely alone. I sat on the sand, closing my eyes to the soothing cadence of the waves. “Today is unusually exquisite and somehow quiet. It’s a winter mood,” I thought.

Then I heard the melancholy sound of a saxophone. I held my breath, listening attentively. The melody gently and sensually played between the rise and fall of the waves. Sometimes, it hushed for a while as the sea sang her part, and then it answered. It was a romantic and intimate conversation, a lyric duet from a dream.

I lost myself in this perfect moment. Eventually, my thoughts surfaced.

“Where does this music come from? Who is playing? Why here?” I jumped to my feet and quickly ran to see.

The musician stood on the rocks overlooking the bay. His saxophone was a gold reflection in the sun that dazzled with colour as he moved from side to side. He was gazing at the vast blue ocean and playing the famous jazz classic Take 5 by Dave Brubeck.

Unaware of any audience, his very heart seemed to pour out on to the brilliant white sand, and the surf rushed in eagerly to draw it to the waiting sea. I closed my eyes. For an instant, I had a vision of the pure energy that is art and nature, mixing in eternal exchange.

As I climbed up to him, he stopped playing and smiled. Tino is in the local band, DIA.

We spoke about how important it is to create unforgettable and beautiful moments for ourselves. Inspiration doesn’t wait for a special occasion. We must make the moment magical when the creative spirit moves us.

I asked him about his saxophone and why it glinted so brightly in the sunshine.

He had it decorated with Swarovski crystals, red, green, silver and blue. It sparkled as he moved.

I also asked him what it means to be happy. “Play and feel music with my soul,” he answered without a moment’s hesitation. He smiled again and continued to play. Leaving the beach, I stopped several times to enjoy his song.

It was such an unusual and wonderful gift for me, which I never expected to find on a deserted beach. A saxophone melody that resonates with the sounds of the waves and evokes a deep truth. Beauty is playing its eternal song. The miracle is we just have to listen.
