The irreversible increase of a wide range of motor vehicles on our roads, with engines that often sound like low-flying jet aircraft, along with outdoor events that get louder each year, raises the question of how far the Bermuda Government is willing to go in the name of what is popular, rather than ensure that proper noise limits are imposed, to avoid noise abuse well after midnight.

Laws in place to control violations should never be bypassed simply to please people with little regard for those entitled to a restful night, from sounds that for many, create discomfort and potential stress.

Complaints from the public over a recent event connected with Bermuda Heroes Weekend celebrations should not be seen as an attempt to halt festivities. The Government should take complaints seriously because excessive noise after midnight should never become the norm. Every Bermudian has a right to have a peaceful night.

Most Bermudians accept that ever-expanding development throughout the island, with loud noises from construction sites, is a part of progress. On the other hand, it is an entirely different story when people hoping for a good night’s rest after a busy day are blasted by loud noises outside their control.

With summer upon us, and parties often running beyond midnight, more consideration for others is needed by everyone involved if we are to have a society that really cares about others.

This can become quite sensitive, when the police, who have a great deal on their plate, appear as party spoilers by simply requesting a toning down of music after midnight.

When people are filled with more than party spirit, reasoning usually goes out of the window. To avoid potential confrontation under such circumstances, most Bermudians tolerate what should be prohibited by law.

That is sad, because no one should be an audio hostage in a country that prides itself on tranquility and peace. If more Bermudians acted with civil responsibility in summer outdoor activities, the situation would improve without a need for further action.

There have been countless studies worldwide on the effects of excessive noise on human behaviour. Yes, we all know noise is a part of life today, and while the clock cannot be turned back to those peaceful days of the past, every effort should be made to strike a balance in managing excessive noises. After all, we have seniors throughout the island who at least deserve quiet nights in their sunset years.

This may not be considered a high-priority subject by authorities, but without addressing the matter, the peaceful Bermuda we love will be under threat. No Bermudian wants that.

Summertime in Bermuda is always great for outdoor fun, and this should be encouraged, but after midnight exceptionally loud music in a residential area is unacceptable. Residents in some cases are reluctant to call police because they have no desire in creating strained relationships in the neighbourhood.

Perhaps that would not be necessary if laws in place were enforced by the authorities. It is not a question of spoiling anyone’s summer fun, but it is a question of civil responsibility in order for everyone to enjoy summer activities without spoiling it for others.

Bermuda can do better in sharing our wonderful qualities in the limited space fate has created for us. This is truly a beautiful island, with beautiful people. We want to build on that, and with co-operation throughout communities, we all should be able to enjoy a safe and happy summer.
