The only way to fly

BermudAir may not be our national airline but it does fill one with immense pride (File photograph by Akil Simmons)

Last week my sister, Kim Famous, and I had a rare sibling trip back to home via BermudAir. The actual online booking of the flight was super easy. Think as easy as ordering via Sargasso Sea or Pronto.

This was my first flight on BermudAir, out of Westchester County Airport in New York. Well, really, the first time even at that airport. The 6pm flight time gives one the option of doing what you want during the day before heading to the airport for a 4pm check-in.

There are some significant advantages of flying out of Westchester County:

• No irritating traffic jams on the highway

• No long walk from the parking lot

• No long lines at check-in

• No long security lines

• No long walk to find your gate

We all know how Bermudians hate a long walk to a gate. One major disadvantage: no Dunkin’ Donuts at the terminal. We all know how Bermudians love to get a dozen doughnuts to bring home.

Flight 224

Stepping on to an aircraft and seeing our Bermuda flag at the door brings a level of pride one is hard to describe. It may not be officially our national airline; however, BermudAir is as close as we will get.

For now.

The aircraft itself is an Embraer 170/175 twin-jet with a seating capacity of about 70. Apart from the hassle-free check-in and the low airfare — less than two lobster dinners — the cabin has nice pink lighting, clean, comfortable seats and in-flight entertainment for your individual mobile devices.

For me, there was something else that sealed the deal: hearing that calm and clear Bermudian accent over the PA system is something in itself. It is almost as if you are hearing your Sunday school teacher. Right there and then, it makes you feel as if you’re back home already.

Bermudian Dark ‘n’ Stormy and sugar cookies

The ability to have a free Dark ‘n’ Stormy with a nicely wrapped Bermuda sugar cookie with sprinkles was definitely a big change from the standard five dry pretzels on the major airlines. I wonder. If you fly on a Sunday, will you be able to get codfish and potatoes, with or without the sauce?

Most impressive of all was the local friendliness and service that took me back to days gone by at the Belmont or Sonesta hotels. Bermudians have to be very proud that our own young people are part of the flight crew.

In closing, if anyone knows BermudAir flight attendant Isha Ford, who happens to be a Berkeleyite, please give her a big hug. She is a true Bermudian ambassador.
