Three legends and an apprentice

Belco brothers: Raymond Bean, left, Alexander Dowling, Troy Baisden and Chris Famous

So, three legends and one apprentice walk into a bar.

Often, far too often, we tend to give people praise when we can no longer have a conversation with them. By then it is far too late for them to hear how we truly feel about them.

So, today we will briefly speak about three fellow Bermudians who many will know. Yet most won’t know what they have done for Bermuda.

Anyone who has used electricity over the past 40 years can thank these three guys in blue shirts. Between them, they have given more than 100 years of service, working around the clock to keep Belco’s generators and the entire plant running.

Raymond Bean spent many decades as a mechanic working his way up to mechanical foreman.

He and others were responsible for routine maintenance of all Belco’s diesel units. Also the associated auxiliary units such as pumps, radiator fans, fuel and oil filtration units. As with all things mechanical, things will break down unexpectedly. It is the mechanics who come in at all sorts of hours to get things back up and running.

Troy Baisden and Alex Dowling formed an integral part of the operations department. Plant operators are responsible for running the plant 24 hours a day, seven days per week. This means working 12-hour shifts, either 8am-8pm or 8pm-8am, in order to keep the country powered up.

Thank you, my brothers.

No one would have ever seen them at work. However, everyone would have been blessed by their work.

Working together at odd hours for decades on end means that you are essentially spending as much time, if not more, with your co-workers as you are with your loved ones.

Essentially, those persons become not just co-workers; they become your family.

So, today I say thank you to these gentlemen, my big brothers, and so many others who helped to train, mentor and raise those inside of those walls at Belco.

Love, TCF (aka Oil Can Harry).
