Are you a master or a student?
Have you ever noticed that the people who are truly great at what they do never call themselves experts? Think about it: the doctor who is always learning, the mechanic who never stops improving, or even the chef who constantly experiments with new recipes. These individuals have something in common — they understand that knowledge is a never-ending journey.
At 26, I find myself in the same boat. I’m still figuring things out, still learning, and, yes, still looking for the right opportunity to kick-start my career. But that’s not a bad place to be. The difference between someone who is truly skilled and someone who just settles lies in their mindset.
When you think you've arrived, you stop moving. The moment you decide you know enough, the doors to growth quietly close. But those who know their craft well are often the first to admit they still have much to learn. For them, there is always another angle to explore, always a way to do things better.
A lifetime of learning, not mastery
It is easy to look at someone successful and think they have it all figured. As Steve Jobs once said, “You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards.”
But the truth is, the best never stop being students. They don’t sit around admiring what they have accomplished; instead, they focus on what they haven’t done yet. The idea of “enough” doesn’t exist in their vocabulary. There is always a better way to solve a problem, a more efficient way to complete a task, or simply a new skill to pick up.
You can see it in the way these people talk about their work. There is an energy there — a sense of wonder and curiosity that keeps them going. They aren’t complacent because they understand that the moment you rest on your laurels is the moment you start falling behind. To them, challenges are just stepping stones, not roadblocks.
No limits to what you can do
As someone who's still early in their journey, I know how important it is to keep that mindset. Think about the person who treats every day as a chance to get better. They aren't thinking about how far they have come; they’re focused on what lies ahead.
This mindset, one that emphasises always pressing forward, is powerful. It creates a belief that anything is possible because it keeps your focus on progress, not perfection.
And this applies to you, no matter what you are working on. Whether you’re at school, starting your career or building a business, keep asking questions. Keep being curious. The truth is, the only thing that sets people apart is whether they decide to keep learning or decide that they have learnt enough. The first group moves forward. The second one stops.
Embrace the student mindset
The takeaway here is simple: if you want to keep growing, stay humble. Don’t consider yourself an expert, even if others do. If you know there’s always more to learn, you will stay open to new possibilities. You will think ahead, always wondering how you can be better. And in that mindset, nothing really is impossible.
So, don’t settle. Don’t let your existing knowledge be the ceiling that stops you from learning more. There is always more to be done, always a new way to grow. The best in any field are just students who never stopped learning.
Never stop pressing forward
The world doesn’t need more self-proclaimed experts; it needs more curious minds who are willing to keep pushing the boundaries of what they know. So, be that person. Think always ahead — not of how good you are, but of how much more you can do. That’s how you grow, and that’s how, one day, nothing will seem impossible to you.
For now, I may not have all the answers or even a steady job, but I’m not stopping. I’m embracing every challenge that comes my way, and each step forward is a chance to learn and grow. I’m pressing forward, learning and staying open to every opportunity. Because I know that, in the end, it’s the student — not the expert — who changes the world.
