Shaun Goater failed to add to his tally before being sacrificed by Manchester City during their goalless draw against West Brom yesterday.

City, who missed the chance to close in on First Division leaders Burnley, had Richard Edghill sent off early in the second-half.

Seconds later manager Kevin Keegan withdrew Goater and changed his formation to take account of the dismissal of the defender.

Earlier Goater had drawn the goalkeeper out only to fail to hit the target, then saw the custodian tip away a goalbound header and finally drove wide of the post after another opportunity.

“We played some of the best football since I came here,” said Keegan. “But we just couldn’t score.”
