A medium to appeal to all says gallery director Peter

FOR any in doubt where the local arts scene is headed - or just how far it's developed in the past year - the multitude of talent now on display in the main gallery at the Bermuda Society of Arts might provide a clue.

Although entitled Reflections of Winter, the exhibit is actually a well-documented display of the range of mediums and styles shown over the past year. And if you listen to gallery director Peter Lapsley, there's a medium to appeal to everybody.

"It's an enormous show," he said. "There's a great deal of work on display encompassing every medium we've seen this year with the exception perhaps of video. So it's an overview of the year's shows and a good example of where the arts are locally.

"Everything that could have possibly been seen through the year is represented and I think that as a representation of Bermuda's visual arts scene, it's pretty thorough."

The juried show of 171 pieces features an all-encompassing body of works - from the landscapes of well-known artists Bruce Stuart and Otto Trott, to the paintings of Society newcomer Hamant Dadlani; digital and regular photography, photograms, ceramics, sculptures, platinum prints as well as pieces made of copper from the Cathedral's old roof.

"A few of Bermuda's (better known) artists don't have pieces here but there's a very good cross-section," Mr. Lapsley added. "I've had many people comment on how interesting it is, especially because it's so diverse, but also because the (pieces) are of a fairly good calibre across the board. There's something for everybody and there's such a range of prices that it's a great Christmas buying venue.

"(The artists have used) traditional and non-traditional mediums and themes; they've really pushed the boundaries. There seems to be a development taking place and (the Society) is excited about where it's going. I think (Reflections of Winter shows how) we're living up to our mission statement. This show represents all sectors of society - all ages, all sexes, all races and all levels of artistic education. It's a show I'm quite proud of."

qReflections of Winter is the Bermuda Society of Arts' winter members' show. A juried event, entry was open to all members. The exhibit runs in the Society's main gallery through January 9.
