A reel treat is in store for island's budding young film-makers

A SUMMER camp for kids interested in any or all aspects of film-making is being offered by the Bermuda International Film Festival (BIFF).

The camps will span eight weeks ? from July 4 through September 2 ? and are being offered to children between the ages of seven and 16.

Industry veteran Vicky Zabriskie will run the programme. An industry veteran who has worked on more than 100 films in all capacities, she is also a former teacher at Florida State University ? a school that was recently rated by the Directors Guild of America as having the top film programme in that country.

Each camp covers a different aspect of film-making and is targeted to a certain age range. As described by Ms Zabriskie: Stage One camps are suitable for kids who want to get their feet wet with the basics of film production. The Stage Two camps are more comprehensive, culminating in a collaborative final student film. Stage Three gives the teenagers the experience of a real film set."

The camps will be held at the Old Colony Club on Trott Road in Hamilton, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. There is the option to extend participation until 5 p.m. daily.

Stage One camps ? for kids between the ages of seven and nine ? will cover three areas. July 18 through 22 focuses on acting, August 8 through 12 looks at animation, and August 22 through 26 covers the area of special effects.

Stage Two camps ? for kids aged ten through 13 ? are divided into two groups. Camera work is the focus of the first camp, to be held August 15 through 19. Screenwriting is the focus of the second camp, scheduled between August 29 and September 2.

Stage Three involves a boot camp for teenagers between the ages of 14 and 16. Held weekdays between July 4 and 15, it will encourage each student to make his or her own film.

Participation in the Stage One and Two camps are limited to 16 participants. Only ten participants will be accepted in the Stage Three boot camp.

Each camp costs $250 a week. For more information, or to register, please contact the festival via e-mail, bifffilmacademyyahoo.com.
