Bermuda single's a major hit

YOU'RE single. You find the antics of such television shows as The Bachelorette, The Bachelor and Joe Millionaire amusing. Perhaps you might even want to give one of them a whirl?

A 30-something Bermuda resident is to experience her own version of such popular reality shows this weekend. In honour of her birthday, the Bermuda bachelorette's best friends are throwing her a surprise party - to which all eligible, single men on the island were invited to attend, courtesy of an ad which appeared this week in The Royal Gazette.

There are, however, certain requirements the bachelors must meet.

"We want men who are handsome. Men who are smart. Men who are outgoing. We don't want any married guys. And, if anybody's ever called you a jerk before, please don't answer the ad," said a party organiser who, in order to maintain secrecy, insisted that all names be withheld.

The men, she added, would not be disappointed.

"She's not some hideous old cow. She really is a catch; really pretty, a beautiful girl. She's outgoing, athletic, university-educated, and has a professional job. She's just having a hard time finding guys. It's hard to meet nice guys in our age group. They're usually married. She is very particular but she's outgoing and really pretty. It's stunning that she's not already attached."

The idea, she explained, came from the bachelorette's obsession with the many reality shows which are popular on American television at the moment.

"She loves (those shows). She wanted to sign up for The Bachelorette but participants had to be American. And so we thought, why not have a themed party and invite single guys? Maybe she'll meet someone she likes. If she was willing to appear on American television we figured she wouldn't mind doing it in Bermuda."

The ad, which asks for "attractive guys to match attractive girl", seems to have been well received by the male population.

"I had to re-word the ad (at the request of The Royal Gazette)," she said. "They didn't want it to sound like a solicitation. We're not sure exactly what we're going to do yet, or how we'll identify ourselves - or her - (to the bachelors) but we'll probably go to a nightclub or something. I've had dozens of calls; tons of guys who've left their names and numbers in response. It's amazing.

"She thinks it's just the girls going out for dinner but I think she'll see the fun in this. She's pretty outgoing. It's not as if she's some wallflower who doesn't meet people.

"At the very worse, it will just end up being a nice night out with a bunch of single guys.

"But if she sees someone interesting, it'll be a good chance for her to meet them."

Interested, attractive bachelors, should leave their name and number at 237-1737.
