Blue Heron to be replaced by new police boat

MARINE police are to get a new boat, replacing their well-known Blue Heron with a 16-metre craft purposed designed for Bermuda.

The new vessel is being built in Australia and is expected to arrive on the island and be fully operational by September of next year.

The announcement was made via press release yesterday.

"The Bermuda Police Service has just signed a contract for the purchase of a new police vessel designed to head up the Marine Police fleet and replace our current Blue Heron," a spokesperson said.

"This is not a recent initiative, but has been the subject of many hours' research and discussion to establish a vessel to fulfil certain roles within the police maritime area of responsibility.

The spokesperson added that the new boat offers a "significant range increase" over the soon-to-be-retired Blue Heron.

Built to operate up to 200 nautical miles offshore, the new boat boasts a "very extensive electronics package" which officers say will enable it to meet its responsibilities as the island's principal search, rescue and surveillance vessel.

"The vessel is being built in Western Australia to a proven design for police use. It will come with a very high standard of finish and is well equipped to perform its day-to-day duties. Primary roles include maritime patrol of the territorial waters of Bermuda, ports and harbour security and search and rescue."
