BMDS set to bring back Brains of Bermuda Quiz
HOW would you define alliteration? Aspiring quiz champions will have to wait with bated breath until October 2005, when the Bermuda Musical & Dramatic Society will bring back the popular Brains of Bermuda Quiz to celebrate the Society's 60th anniversary.
The rebirth of the show is the brainchild of Andrew Whalley, who "researched the music questions" when the quiz had its long run during the Eighties. The format will be the same as before, with three-person teams going head to head in a knockout competition of fast recall and first to the buzzer. Mr. Whalley will be ably assisted on the quiz committee by Philip McIntosh, Janet Slaughter, Susan Bendell, Kelvin Hastings-Smith, president of the BMDS, Steve Watts, Brian Webb and Margaret Potts.
He explained: "I have been trying to revive interest in the quiz for a few years, but it seemed to be a good event to help celebrate our 60th anniversary. The planning is not set in stone but we think it may run to six consecutive nights from a Monday to Saturday, and we thought we might have 24 teams of three and draw eight team names out of a hat and give them a bye for the first round. We are thinking in terms of 35 questions per round to the contestants in each round, with 24 rounds in all, but that format may change too. We expect to have eight groups competing each evening."
Mr. Whalley confirmed that he already has sufficient volunteers to begin the arduous task of researching the questions and checking answers.
"It is very hard work setting the questions and we have already started the process, so that we will be ready by June 2005.
"We will have one source, and then have someone else check that answer, so that we ensure we ask questions to which there is only one answer. The test for inclusion will be ? Is that a good question, and should I have known the answer?
