Brown's steady hand guides Somerset
ALTHOUGH they are top of the First Division, Somerset Trojans coach Dennis Brown has told his players: "Do not take anything for granted."
Somerset, who have one of the richest traditions in Bermuda football and were known as 'Silver City' for the number of trophies they used to take back to their west end clubhouse, suffered the indignity of being relegated at the end of last season.
So they turned to one of the mainstays of the club to try and get back to the top flight this year ? Dennis Brown who took a year off coaching last season after being in charge of Wolves.
And while Brown probably has returning to the Premier Division as his main priority, he said: "The main thing when I first went back to Somerset was to change the attitude of the players. I wanted to increase their passion and desire to play for the club and also their commitment to train. And if promotion comes along with that ? we will take it."
The Somerset task master said that although the club sit on top of the First Division, tied on points with PHC, there is a lot of the season yet to go.
Two weeks ago they defeated east end rivals St. George's 2-1 and so far they have not lost a match this year. Their most celebrated win was a few of weeks ago when they destroyed Social Club 20-0 which put the final nail in that club's coffin ? Social Club pulled out of the league a few days after the 20-0 destruction.
But while others would want to gloat after a 20-0 victory, Brown was just the opposite. Rather he felt sad for Social Club which were a mighty force over three decades ago and boasted some of Bermuda's best ever players.
"It was a sad day for Bermuda (when Social Club pulled out of the league)," said Brown adding, "but I will respect any decision that their committee will come up with to get their programme back on track."
Of Somerset's good start to the season, Brown said: "One thing is that you are never too pleased as a coach. But I admit we have got off to a fairly good start."
But Brown is happy with his squad of players. "Basically we have the Somerset players who stayed from last year plus we added Damon Ming (from Devonshire Colts), Dion Stovell (from Paget), Timmy Figureido (from Vasco) so we have a good nucleus of players. It is a good mix of players ? predominately young players between their teens and early 20s as well as four good experienced players." And one of those experienced players is his captain Karl Roberts. "He is definitely the most experienced player we have," Brown said of his centre half.
While he admitted that fellow former Premier team PHC will be pushing for promotion at the end of the season, Brown said he doesn't take any team in the First Division for granted. And he doesn't have anything bad to say about the other teams. "I do not want to anger any other teams. All the opposition presents a different challenge every week for us. But PHC will be there in the end," he said. This weekend Somerset take on Island Rangers at SCC.
