BTFA boss Simmons lands an international post

BERMUDA Track and Field Association president Judith Simmons has been voted onto the executive committee of the North American, Central American and Caribbean Athletic Association (NACAC).

Simmons, who was elected an executive of the CAC last year, was excited about her new position and said that she was looking forward to fulfilling the role with enthusiasm.

"Naturally to say I am excited, it shows the confidence that they have in somebody like myself," said Simmons.

The election was held in Grenada.

The president of NACAC is Dr. Amadeo I.D.Francis of Puerto Rico while Keith Joseph of St. Vincent is the new vice president.

The other executive members of the 32-nation organisation are Alfred Emmanuel (St. Lucia), treasurer; Manuel Violenus (Costa Rica), secretary and committee members Robert Hersch (USA), Guillermo Araya (Costa Rica), Alain Jean Pierre (Haiti), Maria Ocon (Nicaragua) and Judith Simmons (Bermuda).

The NACAC was founded on December 10, 1988 at an extraordinary meeting held in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

The NACAC is an area division under the umbrella of the International Amateur Athletics Federation, which draws up its own rules relating to its constitution and powers which are limited to operations within its own area.

The IAAF envisions that the activities to be undertaken by its Regional Development Centres shall include:

An increased role in the education of coaches through the IAAF Coaches Education and Certification System including the staging of courses and lecturers seminars and the coordination of basic level lecturers throughout the region served.

Establishing and maintaining a resource centre of books, magazines, film, videos and other materials pertaining to athletics.

Production and distribution of publications required by the region beginning with a regional technical bulletin/newsletter for coaches.

An increase in the number and type of special courses, seminars and workshops to cover topics such as administration, women's athletics, sports medicine and sports science.

Provison of facilities for the headquarters of a regional coaches association and other bodies that may be established.

Research in the various fields of concern to the countries in the region in coordination with the IAAF Development Department.

A role in the education of judges and referees.

Provision of facilities for the training and special preparation of athletes in the region.

The member countries are Anguilla, Antigua, Aruba, Bahamas, Barbados, Beliz, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Canada, Cayman Islands, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Montserrat, Netherland Antilles, Nicaragua, Puerto Rico, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent, El Salvador, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos, USA, US Virgin Islands.
