Canada outgun Bermuda to lift lacrosse cup

THE Tri Nations Cup, Bermuda's Lacrosse Championship, was held featuring area residents squaring off for the island's bragging rights.

The first match pitted the heavily favoured USA squad against the proud and able Bermuda contingent.

James Robinson led Bermuda to an impressive upset, leading his team with four goals in their 5-2 vicotry. John Heckshire and Mike McDonnell replied for the USA.

Top players Robinson and Matthew (Red Dog) Clifford of Bermuda and Heckshire and McDonnell for the USA.

Reeling from the loss, the USA hoped to get back on track with a win over the seemingly weak Canadian entry, but a strong showing from John Buchanan and Ernie Theriault with a brace of goals each led Canada to a 6-5 victory. Matt Clifford picked up two markers in a losing effort.

Players of the match were Canada's Buchanan and Sean Moore while Clifford and Andrew Soucie starred for the USA. The championship match featured Bermuda against Canada.

Bermuda got on the board quickly with a shot from Kirk Bridgewater but the tough Canadian defence of Moore, Steve O'Flynn and Dionne Cullum shut down Bermuda for the remainder of the match, Canada winning 6-1.

Buchanan and Theriault each scored two goals to complete the rout. Players of the match were Theriault and John Bohan of Canada and Gavin Davis and Tucker Moore of Bermuda.
