Disappointment certain for two Premier teams
ALMOST half of the teams for the second round of the FA Cup have been decided, and the remaining nine spots should be decided this weekend with two Premier Division teams certain to be eliminated.
The second half of the first round draw now sees two all-Premier Division ties as the Devonshire Colts-PHC encounter, already called off twice, will now be played on Sunday at White Hill Field. The two Martonmere Cup finalists had their match postponed on Tuesday night because of the condition of one of the goalposts at BAA Field and that match will now be played on Sunday at 2.30
Another Premier Division team is certain to be eliminated at BAA Field where Boulevard, in good form lately, take on an inconsistent Dandy Town outfit. The teams met only last weekend when their make-up league encounter ended in a 1-1 draw and it could be that close again on Sunday.
Boulevard were the FA Cup team of the 1990s when they won the trophy four times in seven seasons between 1990-91 and '96-97 and will be pumped up for this encounter.
Cup holders North Village should reach the last 16 with victory over Commercial side Tuff Dogs at Bernard Park, even though Tuff Dogs, with nothing to lose, will have to be watched very closely.
Commercial champions Robin Hood have the best chance of the four Commercial teams in action this weekend. They meet Wolves at 12.30 match at Bernard Park in a match that has the making of an upset.
Wolves, the holders of the Dudley Eve, have fallen from grace since winning the Dudley Eve in January and now find themselves back in the First Divison and looking at a long climb back to the top division. Wolves did reach the final of the FA Cup while in the then Second Division in 1997, but their team have changed since then with several players moving to new clubs.
St. David's travel the length of the island looking for their first win of the season at Somerset Trojans' expense, which would be a tall order considering the depth of the top two divisions separate the teams. The Trojans are top of the Premier Division while St. David's, a better team than their form suggests, sit on the bottom of the First Division without a win in six outings.
Those St. David's fans not confident enough in their team to make the trek westward can travel to Lord's to see Lionel Cann and St. George's All-Stars attempt to reach the second round with victory over First Division outfit Prospect. This match was originally scheduled for Wellington Oval but has been switched because of a motocross event there this weekend.
Not much has been mentioned of Prospect in promotion predictions, but they could be one of the serious contenders in the second half of the season. They are in third place, still unbeaten after four matches, and have a game in hand over the leaders Hamilton Parish and two over second-placed Ireland Rangers.
It will be interesting to see if the markings for a school football match on one end of the St. David's pitch are still evident. The markings, which ran across the width of the field on the northern end, were there for last weekend's Hamilton Parish-St. George's tie. However, visiting ref Dave Richardson didn't appear to have a problem with the lines and allowed the match to go ahead.
Last month referee Richard Knight postponed the Boulevard-Dandy Town a match at BAA Field because of rugby lines, saying he did not feel confident refereeing a match in those conditions.
The two matches at Devonshire Rec. which were originally scheduled for Sunday have been put back to Tuesday night - Bermuda Pest Control against Paget and Devonshire Cougars versus Social Club.
