Dobson praises youngsters

BERMUDA was one of several countries at a Scotland forum aimed at encouraging a wider participation in the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme.

Local chairman Andrew Dobson and national director Donte Hunt attended the International Award Association's ninth international forum, which coincided with the charity's 50th anniversary celebrations.

Delegates from more than 60 countries were in attendance as were the Duke of Edinburgh and the Earl of Wessex.

"The Duke, who is patron of the Award, and the Earl, who is a trustee, both spoke at the plenary session on the November 6," said Mr. Dobson.

"Highlights included the wonderful activities being done by so many of our young people ? and so rarely reported in the news.

"One of the guest speakers was Stuart Boreham, the first disabled person to row solo across the Atlantic, who recounted his extraordinary feat which is a true inspiration to anyone.

"The Award has been offered in Bermuda for 39 years with many thousands of young people gaining awards. More information on our programme here in Bermuda is available at www.theaward.bm."

The event was significant both for the International Forum, which takes place every three years, and the UK General Council, which is held every two years.

According to Mr. Dobson, each serves as an opportunity for persons involved in the organisation of the Award to "discuss how to open up even more opportunities to all 14-25 year olds across the world".
