How easy will Beckham fit into Real Madrid?

"IT will be interesting to see how David Beckham fits in with Real Madrid. Personally I think it could be a good move for him. He has accomplished a lot at Manchester United and this is a new challenge for him. I am wondering what position he will play. Personally I think he is one of the best crossers of the ball along with taking free kicks so he may be put out on the right. I know that Raul and Ronaldo will like the service he will give them. But Real Madrid have so many great attacking players - Raul, Ronaldo, Zidane, Figo - the list goes on and on. I imagine Beckham and some of the others will be spending some time on the bench throughout the season. The one person who I feel bad for it Guti. He plays for Spain and is a great player and last season he was used a lot as a substitute. He will now have an even harder time getting in the team this coming season with the Bckham signing and I understand that he is now thinking about leaving Real Madrid to get regular playing time somewhere else. I can't blame him if he does leave.

And while buying Beckham will no doubt help out an already great attacking team, I think that what Real Madrid really need are some new defenders. Real score a lot of goals but they also let in quite a lot as well. They are going to have to do something about getting a couple of good solid defenders.

For a while everyone thought Beckham was going to Barcelona who certainly need some help. I think Barcelona may have been a better fit for Beckham. They have some young players and could have used Beckham's leadership. But Barcelona will not be in the Champions League next season so I guess that had something to do with Beckham going to Real Madrid.

TITLEUPFORGRABS

Real Madrid and Real Sociedad will play for the Spanish League title this weekend. And as I have been saying all season, I believe Real Madrid will take it. But one must really admire the way Real Sociedad have played this season and hung in there. They are a much smaller and far less rich club that Real Madrid and they have been at the top for much of the season. Real Madrid are two points clear at the top now so their destiny is in their own hands. Last weekend they had a very good 4-0 victory over Atletico Madrid while Real Soceidad lost 3-2 to Celta Vigo. The last games this weekend see Real Madrid hosting Athletic Bilbao while Real Sociedad host Atletico Madrid. I believe that both Real Madrid and Real Sociedad will win their games with Real Madrid taking the title. If they don't then they will have won nothing all season and for a team like that it would be a disaster.

DEL BOSQUE

I understand that Real Madrid's manager Vicente del Bosque believes that he will not be offered a new contract at the end of the season. Well I think he has done a very good job at Real Madrid - just look at how many Spanish titles he has won and how many Champions League titles he brought back to the club. And he doesn't have the easiest job trying to manage some of the world's best players and keep them happy.

It would be a shame if Real Madrid don't offer him a new contract. As I have said before, the people who often need to be fired are those in the coats and ties who sit in the seats above.

FOOTBALLTRIP

Bermudians really should try and take advantage of watching some first class football this summer when some of the best teams in the world play in the United States. On August 3 Juventus and AC Milan will play at Giants Stadium in the Italian Super Cup. And then you have the friendly matches involving Manchester United, Barcelona, Celtic, Juventus and AC Milan which will be played in Philadelphia and New York as well as on the west coast. I know I am going to try and get to a match or two.

NATIONAL SPORTS CENTRE

I thought the comments by Kenny Thompson that Bermuda's national team players needed to train on the field at the National Sports Centre were ludicrous. Playing on that beautiful surface should be a privelage and an honour. You don't need to train on it. After all England never trained on the pitch at Wembley! When I played for Bermuda most of our training was done at BAA and also in the gym. You do not need a great surface to train on. After all look at the fields that some of the best players in the world have trained on - players from Africa and Brazil. If you can improve your skills on a rough pitch, when you actually play a match on a surface like the National Sports Centre it makes everything so much easier.
