Lightbourne: I still have something to offer

WHILE Shaun Goater takes on a new challenge with his fifth club in England, Reading, fellow Bermudian professional Kyle Lightbourne remains at the crossroads of his career.

Lightbourne, 35 next month and without a club since Macclesfield released him at the end of last season, failed to receive a contract offer from another Third Division club, Kidderminster Harriers, after a loan period with the club during the summer.

"I'll just see how it goes in the next couple of weeks," said Lightbourne who says he was satisfied with his performances while at Harriers.

"At the moment I'll concentrate on my coaching and get that sorted out."

Lightbourne was contacted in Dublin where he travelled to watch the match between Ireland and Australia on Tuesday. He called it the "opportunity to go and watch and see how other teams train", which was something he probably would not have been able to do as a player under contract.

Lightbourne said if nothing developed soon he would pack it in quietly, but he is still hopeful a team which has a bad start to the season might look his way. He has no doubt he still has something to offer.

"Obviously I still do think that, but obviously managers are not thinking that at the moment," said the veteran striker.

"I'm happy with the way life is - obviously I would like to be playing but that's the way it goes, I guess. Kidderminster was local for me and I did quite well there and I don't think it was anything to do with ability."

Recently Lightbourne also watched former club Walsall play Birmingham in a pre-season game and will probably be at the Bescot Stadium when Goater and Reading pay a visit soon.

Lightbourne also had the luxury of travelling with cricketer Noel Gibbons to watch Warwickshire play Leicestershire in a English County match a couple of weeks ago.

"I've been out here 10 or 11 years and haven't had the time to do that," said Lightbourne, a former Bermuda and Cup Match fast bowler.

"Now I have the time to go and do these things. I would like to play when I come back home. I'm looking at possibly next year, I'll see what happens.

"I'll be talking it over with my wife."

Goater will be looking to add to his first goal of the season last weekend when unbeaten Reading play two important matches in the coming days. On Saturday they travel to the Midlands to meet Derby County and two days later host one of Goater's former teams, Rotherham, at Majedski Stadium.

Reading are one of the promotion favourites and they will be relying on Goater's goals to keep them in contention for promotion into the top division for the first time.
