A special Mother's Day session at Paget Primary saw children honour "six great women" in their lives.

The entire student body were asked to write an essay about a great woman in their lives, but only one from each year level was selected for the special Mother's Day assembly at 9 a.m.

The six winners didn't know it, but their mothers, grandmothers and aunts had been invited to the school to hear the touching essays read aloud.

They were also given speciality cakes by Dunkley's Dairy and carnations.

"I held her while she cried, and she held me while I cried," said mother of seven-year-old Tycee, Renee Martin, who came prepared with tissues.

"It was wonderful. I am very proud of my daughter. And to see the look on her face was priceless. It was definitely a very nice way to start off the mother's day week-end," said Leslie-ann Rochester, mother of eight-year-old Chynia.

Rose Robinson, the grandmother of Tasfaye Giraud, felt honoured by the essay. Mrs. Robinson takes her grandson to and from school and the two go all around the Island together. She said she enjoys the time they spend together because the relationship "keeps her young".

Lecolia Caines recalls her daughter Leaira's words during the assembly, which read: "I may have said it before, you are a diamond wrapped in an envelop. You are smart and intelligent, you twinkle like a star".

The two other women honoured were Cherysse Bean by her son Keishon Bean and Sherry Johnston who was honoured by her niece Ajaree Joell-Johnston. According to principal Terry Cox: "It was beautiful. It was a wonderful occasion."
