PLP denies Dame Jennifer is stepping down

THE Progressive Labour Party (PLP) yesterday denied former Premier Dame Jennifer Smith had resigned from her seat in St. George's.

The Party released a statement amid rumours of a by-election in the constituency, necessitated by Dame Jennifer's departure. No mention was made of where the information appeared.

However, a statement issued by constituency chairman Carlton Tyrell said "a recent report in the media about the possibility of a by-election" was "absolutely false".

"Dame Jennifer has not submitted her resignation. Dame Jennifer is working diligently in her constituency on behalf of all the voters, her party and her country.

"We are proud of her long years of service as a Senator and Member of Parliament since 1989, for the community of St. George's and the people of Bermuda."

Dame Jennifer served as the first Premier, taking the reins after the PLP stormed to victory in 1998. She was ousted in 2003 by members of her party, only days after the party was returned to power.
