Sculptures for sale

THE Masterworks Foundation is to auction off its array of Bermuda Onion sculptures which, for the last few months, have decorated various public areas at the Fairmont Southampton Princess.

The auction will take place July 14, a celebration of both the charity's 19th birthday and Bastille Day in France.

Up for grabs are 50 sculptures designed by individuals and organisations. The proceeds will be divided, used to fund public art and art education.

Dubbed 'Bermuda Onionation', the event follows on a successful Masterworks event last year, which raised $140,000 through the sale of 52 fibreglass hogs.

Residents are being encouraged to attend the event, with Masterworks advising: "Last chance to check out onions in and around the Fairmont Southampton Resort. Only two weeks left until they are auctioned off. The whole bunch of onions will come under the hammer on Friday, July 14 at 7 p.m.

"Everyone is welcome to come and join in the fun on Bastille Day and celebrate Masterworks' 19th birthday with the chance to bid on your favourite onion. Bidding starts at $2,000, there are plenty to choose from, and it will not be over until the auctioneer says, 'That's shallot'."

The auction will take place in the Poinciana Room at the Fairmont Southampton Princess at 7 p.m. Registration starts 6 p.m.
