Shoestring backpacker Stuart's show raises money for charity

BACKPACKER Stuart Smith has been around the world on a shoestring and next week he will be sharing some of his extraordinary experiences with an audience to raise money for charity.

His slide show, An Assault on the Senses, with narration by himself, will feature images (like the one shown above) he captured during his travels through India on a budget of $11 a day.

Mr. Smith's adventures took him from Madras to Trivandrum to Bombay, and Rajasthan to Delhi, Varanasi and Calcutta. One highlight of his trip was shaking hands with the Dalai Lama. The show will take place at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute next Wednesday, starting at 7.30 p.m.

It will last around 90 minutes and the proceeds will go to the Bermuda Audubon Society. Ticket prices have not yet been finalised, but should be between $10 and $15.

"I'm passionate about the benefits of backpacking and I hope the audience will include many young people," Mr. Smith said. "I want to show them that travelling doesn't have to mean staying in a $300 hotel room."
