Songstress Shakira's hits 'Don't Lie'...

WORLD Cup fever is upon us and the games are so-so. However, last Sunday I went to the Bermuda Department of Tourism's Feel the Love Beach Party and it was kicking. For the first time in ages, I felt like Bermuda's tourism product could compete with what is being offered in other, so called cool destinations.

Gotta give Belcario Thomas of Unite Promotions props for putting on an awesome event. The Bermuda Department of Tourism has put on an entire slate of events for each night during the summer, so they must get some credit as well. More on all of this after the Top 20.

Holding it down at the top of the hits is Cheri Dennis with her monster R&B/hip hop hit I Love You, which features Yung Joc. This song has a sweet melody, a punchy beat and the video get lots of airtime on cable stations. Soaring to number two is It's Going Down by Yung Joc, a relatively new player in the business who, as you can see, has his name/voice on the top two tracks this week.

Down to number three is Enough Crying, the latest from Mary J. Blige, featuring Brook-lyn. Falling to number four is Gimmie That by Chris Brown. Slipping to number five is What You Know by T.I., one of the hottest rappers in the game. I guess he is kind of like the flavour of the month.

Up to number six is a former essential new joint, When You're Mad by Ne-Yo. This one is all over the radio. Steadily improving to number seven is Why You Wanna by T.I, DJ LT's current favourite hit. You have got to hear the beat of this track. If it doesn't make you bop your head, you're not cool.

Temperature by Sean Paul falls to number eight. There are at least 10 other dancehall tracks produced this year that feature the beat of Temperature. Improving to number nine is Clockwork by Juelz Santana.

Up to number 10 is last week's essential new joint, Hum Hum, a controversial dancehall anthem by Beenie Man. Up to number 11 is Ms New Booty by Bubby Sparxx featuring the Ying Yang Twins. Down to number 12 is 4 Minutes, a beautiful slow joint by Avant.

Making a big splash onto the chart at number 13 is Hips Don't Lie by Shakira featuring Wyclef Jean, this week's essential new tune. This hit is kicking and being played all over the place. Hips definitely don't lie!

Another new track, in at number 14, is Wanna Love You Girl by Robin Thicke featuring Pharrell from the Neptunes. This cat Pharrell is on all the hot joints and this one has a funky, punchy beat which bangs beneath catchy lyrics that are easy to learn and sing.

Now some soca. Improving to number 15 is Roll It by Allison Hinds featuring Machelle Montano. Up to number 16 is Park It by Explainer, which tells a funny story. Moving on up to number 17 is Max It Up by Destra, which has loads of energy and is good for any party.

Jumping up to number 18 is Don't Stop, another soca hit, but this one is by Shurwayne Winchester. Moving to hip hop, up to number 19 is Dime Piece by Nick Cannon. And rounding things out at number 20 is another new track, Torn by Letoya. This track is smooth and you just have to hear it.

Now back to this week's word- the improving state of entertainment in Bermuda.

You have to give the Bermuda Department of Tourism and Transport some love, especially since their new slogan is "Feel the Love". In response to constant complaints, over many years, about the lack of entertainment available in Bermuda, I think the Department has finally gotten it right.

After trying a few events last year with moderate success, this year the BDOT&T is really onto something. The difference is that they looked at what was done last year and improved upon it, dropping events that didn't do so well. This was an intelligent business decision.

I'm still not in love with Tony and Tina's Wedding, but it is another option for visitors and locals, in terms of things to do in the evenings.

My only regret is that local entrepreneurs didn't have or take the initiative to do this themselves and that the Government had to step in and drive entertainment. I've been to the Feel the Love Beach Party at Horseshoe Bay a few times and have watched this event grow. Being a traveller, I've seen happening parties in places like Barbados, Jamaica and Puerto Rico where locals and tourists are partying, and I've often wondered why we didn't have a competitive entertainment offering in Bermuda. Well, fret not my people; help is on the way. I implore you to go to the Beach Party up at Horseshoe. It rocks, even though it's on a Sunday night.

Tourists need entertainment options every night and locals are always looking for something to do, especially our young people. The Feel the Love beach party is kicking. There you'll find a cool atmosphere; DJs jamming the hottest dance tunes (all varieties of musical tastes will be satisfied and many of the tracks in this column were played); beautiful people, reasonable prices; a sanctuary of white bungalows; white tepee huts; and all of this on Bermuda's signature beach. All in all, it's a good night out and since it starts at 8 pm and normally finishes at 1 pm, you can still get to work on Monday morning without being completely shattered.

There is an entire lineup of events for the entire week and I encourage the Bermudian public to check out these events because they are not just for tourists. We in the tourism industry understand that for visitors to have the ultimate Bermuda experience; they must interact with Bermudians. In addition to the Feel the Love Sundays, there is the Sunset Musicfest at Snorkel Park in Dockyard and the Chewstick New Griot Lounge at Champions Sports Bar in Hamilton, all on Sunday nights.

On Mondays there is the Island Festival Extravaganza at the Spinning Wheel Entertainment Complex and the "MMM" (Mediterraneo Martini Madness). Tuesdays there is Jazz Night at Spinning Wheel and Theme Nights at Splash Nightclub. Wednesdays brings Pizza Europa at Square One and the Weekend Warm Up at Docksiders. Thursdays, the place to be is Bootsie's Comedy Club and on Fridays there is the jamming Happy Hour at the Pier. There are Jazz Nights on Fridays and Saturdays at Meditteraneo and 2-4-1 Saturdays at Ozone.

So, check out the Summer series of events and have yourselves a hott beach and sizzle season. Don't let anybody ever say that there is nothing to do in Bermuda, at least not this summer. Anybody who can't find something to do in Bermuda doesn't want to do anything!

Peace ...
