Stanley has a ball on his 60th birthday
WHEN the 60th birthday of Stanley Lee was looming, his good friends prevailed upon him that it was too significant a milestone in his busy life to go ordinarily. So he obliged them, took over the Sapori Restaurant on the White Sands Road in Paget and threw a party.
There was one stipulation Stanley made to his wife Meredith. The guest list was to be restricted to no more than 100 persons. It wasn't easy but it happened. And as he had hoped, the National Youth Orchestra's Jazz Ensemble was at centre stage of the entertainment. The Ensemble, under direction of the renowned Wendell (Shine) Hayward did not need much persuading to go along with the programme.
After all, one of the Ensemble's 'hottest' members is the Lees' daughter, 17-year-old Stephanie, who plays the e-flat baritone saxophone. She is also a versatile pianist and flautist.
Stanley, originally from Devonshire, now lives in Sandys. He is an accountant and office manager of the Gibbons Company conglomerate.
Among other things, he is a member of the board of West End Development Corporation and the Sandys Secondary School trustees and board. Previously he was Education Officer of the Bermuda Industrial Union, comptroller of the Union's old Co-Op, and supervisor of West End Business Services of the Bermuda Telephone Company.
Our photos show Stanley and his wife Meredith, a legal secretary, taking delight in posing with the Youth Orchestra's Jazz Ensemble. On his left is their daughter Stephanie with her great big baritone sax. Ensemble leader, Wendell (Shine) Hayward is second from right (rear). Other musicians are drummer Hugh Seymour, tenor sax Desmond Smith; keyboard Aaron Edness, Akil Trott, trumpet and Juan Lucas Gibbons.
Below Stanley and company behind (seated) his mother Mrs. Olive Lee, uncle Robert Lee, left and uncle Austin Smith and wife Marion. Austin is a Deacon at Miracle Temple, Devonshire. The uncles and other Lees were reputedly some of Bermuda's leading stone-cutters.
