Students to meet bosses at career days

TWO career days set for the end of the month will give students the chance to network with some of the island's top employers, and also lend sound career and scholarship advice.

The first, geared towards senior students at the Berkeley Institute and CedarBridge Academy, is entitled 'Meeting the Future Leaders of Bermuda'.

"There will be opportunities to network with key decision-makers and get career and scholarship advice," a Government spokesperson said yesterday in announcing the event.

"(It) follows closely on the heels of a most successful session held at the CedarBridge Academy last year. At its heart, the Future Leaders' networking sessions present senior students with real-time, real-life opportunities to take the skills learned in the classroom and apply them to the real world in an environment where they can meet and speak directly with potential employers within Government and the business community."

The second event, the Bermuda Careers Fair, is aimed at a broader audience and will give those attending the chance to network with some of the island's top employers.

"Middle and secondary students are encouraged to attend with their parents, as well as persons seeking new job opportunities," the spokesperson added. "Many organisations with a specific interest in youth, and youth development ? such as the Bermuda Technology Education Collaborative (BTEC), the Chamber of Commerce, the National Training Board and the Bermuda Careers Centre ? will be present (and) there will also be overseas school and college recruiters to give advice and information on admission criteria for those who plan to attend school overseas after high school."

Added Marisa Hall, co-ordinator for BTEC: "We have organised the future leaders event to continue to show the business community all the positive results in the senior school system that we have had since BTEC was launched in the schools.

"This year we are teaming up with the Careers Fair organisers because there is an obvious synergy between these two events. We are hoping that our students attend and make the most use of both of these events."

The student networking event, 'Meeting the Future Leaders of Bermuda', will be held at the Bermuda National Gallery on March 29 between 4.30 p.m. and 7.30 p.m.

Premier Alex Scott will open the Bermuda Careers Fair at noon at the Number One Shed in Hamilton, on Tuesday, March 30. The fair is a collaboration between the Department of Labour and Training, the Royal Gazette Ltd. and the Hamilton Rotary Club.

For more information on either event, interested persons should telephone Marisa Hall at 294-7230. Students at the Berkeley Institute may register their attendance with Joann Adams while CedarBridge students may register with Theresa Millett.
