The walls come tumbling down

An out of control cement truck ploughed through a wall and landed on a St. George's residents front porch yesterday.

At approximately 3:40 p.m. yesterday a Hunt's Sanitation Services truck veered off Wellington Back Road. The driver Aubrey Simmons said the steering rod on the truck broke, which caused him to loose control of the vehicle. He added that he was also unable to brake because the "wheels were twisted".

Mr. Simmons said the next thing he knew the truck veered into a wall, narrowly missing two Belco workers who were repairing a telephone line.

"There was nothing you could do, it happened in a manner of seconds," Mr Simmons says. "I felt like I was rolling over big boulders because of the steering."

He then used the handbrake to slow the truck down before it crashed into the porch. Luckily, no one was home at the time of the crash and no one was injured.

The home owner, Claudine Allen, was surprised when she arrived home at 4 p.m.

"I had no porch, my porch was completely destroyed," she said. "I'm glad it was no worse. It was quite a shock to see part of my house gone".

Police arrived on the scene soon after and inquiries are underway. Photo by Chris Burville.
