Thumbs up for Sports Fair

SPORTS Management Action Committee (SMAC) vice-president, Craig Smith, has dubbed last Saturday's second annual Sports Fair a "resounding success", writes Colin Thompson.

The fair, held at the Number One Shed on Front Street, attracted well over 700 local sports enthusiasts.

"It was absolutely fantastic," he exclaimed. "We had a great crowd turnout with about 700 people come through the door and 31 local sports groups which participated.

"The Bermuda Sub Aqua Club put on a great demonstration and Alan Paris and David Bascome were both there and they had a lot of people coming to them seeking information. And quite a few of the groups had new people sign up. It was just fantastic."

Sports Minister Dale Butler officially opened the fair with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Smith said: "All of the participants did great work with their booths and they put a lot of effort into it. And all in all it was just a succesful event."

After thanking his fellow committee members and sponsors, Smith said plans for next year's event were already being discussed.

"We are definitely on for next year and so we are going to see how we can do an even better job. Hopefully will will make the event bigger and better and open it up to more people," he added.

"A lot of people don't realise that there are that many sports here on the Island. So this is a great opportunity for them to see it and get information about them.

"I would like to thank the whole committee for putting in a lot of hard work and effort to ensure the event was a complete success. And of course I'd like to thank our sponsors Department of Youth and Sport, Air Care, Audio Visual Electronics, Atlantic Security, Bermuda Pest Control, Fidelity International, Pasta Pasta Blue Dragon and PM Electric."

All additional sponsorship funds from last Saturday's event were donated to the Bermuda Special Olympics Association.
