Volunteers needed to keep Exhibition grounds clean

GREEN-minded volunteers are needed to help a local charity keep the grounds clean and raise environmental awareness during the Bermuda Exhibition at the Botanical Gardens next weekend.

For the second year, the Greenrock organisation has agreed to attend the annual event and monitor garbage bins, mindful of the fact that not all residents bother to separate recyclable and non-recyclable trash.

With an ultimate aim "to inspire as many people as possible to be conscious about how much they throw out and what can be recycled", the group is now appealing for volunteers to assist its efforts during the three-day event.

"Last year Greenrock provided recycling bins and collected 19 blue bags full of recyclables," explained a spokesperson for the charity.

"This year, the Department of Works & Engineering will be providing the bins, but we still need volunteers to monitor the bins for trash, and to encourage people to recycle their cans and glass bottles."

She added that volunteers who accept the task will have a far less tedious time than those who helped out at last year's Bermuda Exhibition did.

The bins selected for use this year "have lids with a hole cut out, so the job will not entail as much digging" as it apparently did last year.

Greenrock was founded in 2004, its main aim to raise the awareness of environmental issues on the island through education and entertainment.

A non-profit organisation, it has as its goal "empowering all individuals to do their part in making Bermuda socially, economically and environmentally sustainable for future generations".

Two people are needed for the same time slots on each of Exhibition's three days ? Thursday, April 20, Friday, April 21 and Saturday, April 22, between 10 a.m. and 1.30 p.m. and 1.30 p.m. and 5 p.m.

Those who assist get free admission on that day and will be given a Greenrock T-shirt, to wear during their volunteer time slot..
