Brokaw backs essay contest

NBC Nightly News anchor Tom Brokaw has thrown his support behind the island's sixth annual Tom Pettit Essay Competition.

The friend and NBC colleague of the late journalist Tom Pettit has taped an announcement urging Bermuda's secondary students to enter the contest, which was established in Mr. Pettit's memory in 1997.

Mr. Brokaw urges students to "think about growing up on a peaceful and safe island with vast opportunities, cultural diversity, a clean environment and kind climate".

He continues by suggesting that young writers "consider family, friends and your freedoms" when writing their essays entitled Why I am Thankful.

The essay competition is open to all secondary students in Bermuda and $5,000 in prizes will be awarded to the winners. The entry deadline is Friday, November 1, 2002.
